Where to fill my e-reader (sh.itjust.works)

So I’m off on holiday soon, and my x4 e-reader is conspicuously devoid of unread sci-fi. Can anyone point me at a good source? I’ve checked the easily findable places

lots of useful posts above but

not sci fi so much but Project Gutenberg has lots of old stuff, by that I mean Dickens, Joseph Konrad etal

my gfs currently reading Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" from there and loves it.

https://www.gutenberg.org/

but for Sci Fi there's Wells etc

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=h.+g.+wells

and they do have a science fiction category

annas archive is very nice

[-] squeeb@quokk.au 5 points 1 day ago

this is the only one you need to know, tbh. its an amalgamation of mirrors of basically every other public archive

Local library, best free source of ebooks I've found out there, and it's perfectly legal.

[-] noodles@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago

Has anyone found a way to use the ebooks without Amazon? Every one I've joined has used Libby to access Kindle books and I haven't found a different way to access the content.

[-] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

if you mean library books ? i use Kobo and it has Overdrive for e-Library access to my local library, works even overseas and I thought it might be geolocked. (I travel SE Asia 8 months a year on the cheap)

I just use Calibre and plug in via USB for the 10,000+ebooks i have.

Is it possible to remove the drm from overdrive?

[-] dermanus@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago

There's an extension for Calibre called DE-DRM that works in the majority of cases.

[-] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I download for reading and either just read with the adobe DRM still there, or strip the adobe DRM to have a clean epub file.

Don't know about amazon, haven't encountered Libby using that.

[-] PennyRoyal@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

That’s a fantastic shout, I’ll get down there tomorrow

[-] nixfreak@thebrainbin.org 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah I second that , huge selection of ebooks, audiobooks, and more just using a library card and you can get it digital also from libby or Hoopla. Free linkedin learning also

[-] Manalith@midwest.social 4 points 1 day ago

If you use Soulseek, you could do a search for a generic word and then filter it to .epub files and see what it finds

Heck yeah, that’s a brilliant site, thanks. I haven’t sailed the high seas in a long while, I don’t consume much media these days that’s not physical, so that’s a really good shout

if you've got the spare time to wait for the open sign ups on myanonamouse, they've got an extremely extensive collection of rather rare ebooks.

if not, annasarchive and the sources on fmhy are very useful.

[-] PennyRoyal@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I’ll give that a go, thanks, I have time

[-] GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago

the electronic library. for suggestions about titles, I usually browse the locus and the nebula prizes

[-] PennyRoyal@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

I scout them regularly, so that’s perfect, thanks

Baen free library. You want SciFi? Baen has DRM free books before amazon existed.

https://www.baen.com/allbooks/category/index/id/2012

Z-library has a 10/day limit, but is a neat source to find books.

[-] PennyRoyal@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Mint, thanks

Torrents are sometimes organized under an author's name for their collected works

Archive.org has a bunch of public domain/commons books in e-reader formats

[-] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Torrent. Go on your favourite torrent site, google your favourite author, download their entire collected works.

[-] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

MAM is great if you can get in

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca -5 points 1 day ago

I would suggest, unsolicited as it is, to visit some place in the world, and leave the internet behind for a couple of weeks.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 7 points 1 day ago

They’re bringing books, not the internet. Some people enjoy reading books in their spare time.

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca -2 points 1 day ago

Books? I am unfamiliar with that term.

I am reading Nobel House, part of the Asian Saga of my man, James Clavell. Nah de leh moh all government. (Fuck the mother of... in Cantonese, no one can swear like the cantonese.)

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

Terry Pratchett currently. Just finished The Rose Field by Philip Pullman. Love the series, the ending was great. Took an anti-capitalist turn I didn’t expect.

I have been doing some history, including this book from 1905 or something, they are shorts, 40 pages or so each, this Russian one I read, authored in part by Tolstoy if I recall, was just sad, talking about the "Russian Revolution" of like 1905 or something.

It was something, labour unrest that spread, the tsar tried to violently quash it as they were wont to do, and it made the protests spread further. The Tsar eventually agreed to a constitutional monarchy and all that, but then the new duma angered him right off and he had them sent to the gulag and death. But then had to reinstitute it at some point.

The authors were all hopeful for Russia's future and shit, just sad, given a couple years later WWI tore them up.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

Man that must be depressing to read. :(

[-] PennyRoyal@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

Thing is, to get to the place that I’m visiting, I have 20+ hours of flying each way, and a months worth of reading in bed to do when I’m there. If I took enough books to keep me occupied, I’d need to pay for extra baggage

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca 1 points 1 day ago

James Clavell is great for historical fiction. I would skip Shogun to start, and start with Tai Pan.

[-] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

Anna's archive is a cheaper thrill that enables one to join the long tradition of being pseudo-cosmopolitan through reading

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Sure. OP made it sound like they have a job that gives 2 weeks paid vacation, and if that's the case, go somewhere cool. If you are not in that position, yes, what you say.
