American Mahjong kinda blows, but Japanese Mahjong is a lot of fun. I got a set from Costco for like $50 and I play with my roommates while drinking on weekends. It's a great time.

What’s the difference?

American mahjong plays a little more like poker, but the hands change every year and an annual rulebook costs $5

Japanese Mahjong is a little more complex and has a fixed set of winning hands, more akin to gin rummy with some fancy special options and it has some extra elements that make it better for gambling (Red 5's and Dora tiles)
