There are plenty of people in the world who can take a few steps but use a wheelchair so they can live a more fulfilling life, since they can’t walk far.

Saying “it’s a miracle” to this is quite shitty behaviour

100%, and it makes life difficult for albilatory wheelchair users when people assume they're faking a disability when they exit the chair

[-] TheRagingGeek@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

My wife and kids lost relationships over this mentality, her shitty father went around telling everyone at the family reunion that she was crazy and all her physical disabilities were made up. She has Eiler-Dahnlos hypermobility and all kinds of auto immune issues(something affecting her nerves) and my kids inherited some of her inheritable disorders. Most people disregard their disabilities because they are capable on some days or for short times, they don’t see that 2 days later they’re paying for that effort by being bedridden in pain for the next 2 days.

This goes for anyone with a disability placard hanging from their car, parking in those spots, walking with a service dog, etc - just mind your own business, you aren’t a trained doctor, you can’t see internal issues, and people’s private lives and health information isn’t your business, so mind your own and leave other people alone.

Stuff like this enables bullying of disabled people. Sometimes they can walk, but only so far. Invisible disabilities suck so much. There's always a Karen than thinks you only need a wheel chair if you're paralyzed and that's simply not the case.

Someone shamed some old vet beggar who would sit in a wheelchair by a known intersection in town.

He was missing a leg.

Someone posted on some community FB page , photos of the guy standing and bending down or something.

And people were going crazy saying he was a faker for asking for money.

Dude was a vet who lost his leg.

He wasn't paralyzed. He never said he was.

He is in the chair because he can't walk much.

Doesn't mean he can't stand at all.

Idk. But yeah it's a common misconception that only paralyzed people need wheel chairs.

Terrible. I bet they all had "support our troops" and those stupid yellow ribbons on their cars.

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

It's a tricky line to walk.

On the one hand, you are absolutely right that ability to hobble over a few feet from your chair does not mean the chair is obviously not needed.

On the other, wheelchairs are a very popular prop for grifting folks.

It's pretty damn near impossible to make an informed judgement on such a matter in an instant, and lots of people do exploit that.

So it's easy, which path did you like, giving anyone with access to a prop wheelchair however much they are trying to get out of you, or denying aid to anyone that ever managed to get up out of a wheelchair, however briefly?

[-] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 1 points 2 days ago

Wow, you really thought you were cooking with that one.

Here’s a thought: if someone’s in a wheelchair, presume it’s useful to them to get around.

There’s no step 2.

Let's assume that people massively want to cheat (unfortunately, they don't, and a lot of people die because of this); let's say 9 people on 10 are cheating. Are you okay to discriminate one handy because you don't want to be scam ?

You just making him/her pay because of your ego. To rephrase it : one many disabled people are you okay to discriminated because you don't want to be scammed ?

Okay let's levelup; if someone is cheating, maybe this one has a better idea of the reason he has to do it than you are.

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 5 points 3 days ago

They should make wheelchairs with built in toilets

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago

It would be too sloshy.

Commode chairs exist (for rolling from bed to over the toilet or using with a pot when the toilet isn't accessible) but they usually don't have the big pushable wheels, just little casters, so someone else has to drive.

Leg bags with catheters also exist and can be worn in a wheelchair.

But it's also legit for a person with (for instance) a bad heart or hips or back to need a wheelchair while being able to stand or walk briefly. Perhaps enough to get to the hedge but not a farther-away public toilet, if there even is one.

imagine a world where there's mobile portapotties that follow people around using enhanced scanning devices to seek out the people most likely to need them

[-] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago

You are rolling along minding your own business, and suddenly out of nowhere a portapotty starts stalking you down the street. You dont need to use a bathroom but it just keeps silently following you, maintaining a distance that is both comforting and creepy as hell. You feel watched, because you are. Both by the portapotty and by everyone in the vicinity who are waiting to see if you do need to use the bathroom. Those algorithms are always right, thats what the marketing said anyway.

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 3 points 3 days ago

They're banking on the fact that everyone poops eventually so it just follows people around at random. The scanning equipment are just props looted from Forbidden Planet.
