I love animated movies, and I wanted to support these films by owning physical copies.

All four have received great reviews, and I think European animation deserves more recognition. I've only watched the first two so far and really like them, excited to watch the other two.

I have a friend who got filtered because "there isn't even any talking and nothing happens"

Hope you have Mars Express (2023) as well

I came here to recommend it.

It's not only a great animated movie, it's also one of the few movies that do scifi right, i.e. most of the plot can only work in that exact scifi setting, and even many of the actions scenes can only work in that setting.

I never got into Letterboxd, Goodreads etc but when I discovered NeoDB (eggplant.place is the bleeding edge instance of NeoDB), I was really glad I did.

A bit more info on NeoDB:

Flow was sublime.

Arco is such a great movie. It was an awesome surprise after I downloaded it and watched it with my son.

You should add this to your list, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1865505/

Song of The Sea, its beautiful

Yo ARCO was fantastic. I've been recommending it to everyone since I saw it.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world -2 points 4 days ago

Okay but why'd they name the film after a gas station?

Nicely-composed photograph of a suspiciously clean ARCO gas station at night (it's probably a promotional image)

Because it's fuel for your soul, man.

Saw arco at my indie theater, an excellent movie!

[-] TheYellowFrog@piefed.social 4 points 4 days ago

I saw it too, it was the last day of the movie and i was practically alone. A magical experience

[-] jacksilver@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Robot Dreams is so depressing and unnecessarily cruel that I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe things pick up by the end, but I couldn't make it through it.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I've already seen Steven Spielberg's A.I.; that was already enough unnecessarily-cruel-dystopia-involving-robots for me as-is. I already had my fill with that film and don't need anymore of it.

Thanks for the warning.

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 1 points 4 days ago

Just because it was unnecessarily cruel doesn't make it an inaccurate prediction.

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

I loved the movie but you definitely need to be prepared for it. Don't watch it if you are feeling down already

[-] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Don't watch it if you are feeling down already

I love “make me hurt” movies these days (whether nexause I’m just that sad or its cathartic, I’m not sure, but if it CAN make a person cry, it probably makes me cry rn) so I appreciate that note. I already have this movie and just haven’t watched it yet, so next time I need a good hard emotional thing, I know where to look!

[-] jacksilver@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Does the ending make it worth it? I watched it on a plane and bailed after I saw enough abuse at the beach, but could be tempted to give it another try if the ending at least provides some decent closure or meaning to the story.

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago

It has meaning and closure, yes. It's not a traditional happy ending tho

[-] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Those all look like good films. Definitely gonna have to check them out!
