Brasília (AFP) – Brazil's left has mounted a political fightback ahead of the October 25 presidential runoff, rallying supporters in the streets, overhauling its social media campaign and pushing through a landmark labor reform.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80, was jolted when he finished behind right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro -- son of former president Jair Bolsonaro -- by 47 percent to 45 percent in the October 4 first round.

But a Datafolha poll published Thursday showed Bolsonaro's lead in the runoff narrowing from four percentage points to two, putting the rivals in a statistical tie.

Bolsonaro was on 51 percent of valid votes against Lula's 49 percent, within the survey's two-point margin of error.

Seeking a fourth term, Lula is now targeting the 33.4 million Brazilians who stayed away from the first round -- more than one in five eligible voters.

"Lula is still in the race, and the election is far from decided -- despite what many of us thought after the first round," political scientist Eduardo Grin of the Getulio Vargas Foundation told AFP.

What is global news?

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn't have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title formatPost title should mirror the news source title. If you don't like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.
URL formatPost URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.
[Opinion] prefixOpinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.
Country prefixCountry prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn't clearly mention the country.
