oh great a flying car, can't wait for an "update" at the zenith to shut everything down, then smash itself in the ground while I'm in it. It will explode into flames, and I'll try to climb out but oh no! The door won't open.

Fantastic

I'll wait until analog buttons return and perhaps even update control. What year will it be before the car remembers my custom settings? 2050? Can we do this by 2050?

p.s. somebody please make a simple car, electric, electric hybrid, and gasoline, that has easy repair access and interchangeable batteries. Remove the fucking TV and return to buttons so you don't have to scan a screen while driving. A basic generic car that you can upgrade if you'd like. Something you can drive to death, like the classic Honda Civic of yore.

There's some reason nobody is making is car, because people want it... is it governmental regulation? I don't know

They make those cars. But in Melonski land it was made Illegal to sell them because "China scawwy, god bless gunland".

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

I've wrote this before and I'll write it again. Conversion kits need to become mainstream. It's like my old Jeep can have pretty much any engine. Someone converted theirs with using parts from a junk yard Tesla.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

And it'll be extra nice because those kits could also deshitify the car in the process. Oh, you stuck a dependency on a functional phone home system in the fuel injection loop? Who cares after I've removed the fuel injectors?

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

That's what I want.

as battery tech improves and electric motors become more powerful and ubiquitous it'll happen. there's a small market of people converting classic cars to ev. one day I'd like to convert my old honda element. I don't need 300 miles range, give me 80 and it'll be fine for grabbing lumber or taking junk to the dump.

and a host of companies trying to cater to the market -

dig around and there's a lot more. there's a lot of rolling stock that can be swapped eventually, it would be stupid to condemn all that metal to scrap.

No, we need more rail. Enough with cars.

Business idea: Very cheap electric city car with low range, but standardised commodity batteries you can rent for long journeys.

[-] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

Why not a city car EV and just rent another car when you need to make long journeys?

Or for me in the UK, why would I want a car, you can't even drink in it. Trains have staff to sell me a drink.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

Having sat on a rail replacement bus inching its way towards Stansted down the M11 while the takeoff time loomed closer and closer, I think I'll pass on that for important journeys.

Quite happy to take it to work, the worst that happens there is a shorter working day.

[-] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Because motorways are famously never going to leave you stuck in traffic...

[-] Jiral@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Making batteries exchangeable adds a lot of costs and overhead. The battery changing infrastructure is even a greater nightmare. Nio tried it and failed. With batteries getting better and better, this concept also is getting less and less feasible. It is really easier and cheaper to expand infrastructure of long range EV renting. That said, in Europe taking the train and renting an EV at the destination (range is not much of an issue then either) is probably the more relaxed option anyway, if a car is needed at all.

Go ahead with your idea. You might discover how the American consumer really feels about EVs.

Well, Leon Hitler will remotely shut the pile of bolts down on you while in mid-flight.

Nah I'm good. I don't want a klanborghini from him.

I walked past a Tesla showroom recently and they had one car on the floor that they still sell, two that they haven't sold in decades, and a robot they still don't.

Go get a used Chevy Bolt or Nissan Leaf. Tesla ain't the only EV in the US.

[-] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the best small EV in the USA. I highly recommend it.

I don't honestly think the US has the technical ability anymore. The US doesn't really make much and hasn't since the seventies. That's a long time. How much of a Ford is actually made in the US? Shoot, how much is designed in the US?

Best they could do would be buy the parts, maybe make the frame, paint it and assemble. Don't make batteries, don't make screens, or chips, or leds or much of nothing.

There won't be flying cars until Autonomous Vehicles have a perfect self driving score.

Joe Average Potata-brain can't drive as it is. Now they want to add the extra chaos of multiple tons of debris falling from the sky after minor crash bends one of the stabilizer ports out of alignment?

[-] keyez@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

I'm probably gonna get an Ioniq 6 or 5 in a year or two, those are very affordable and have actual buttons and switches.

[-] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I'm still a little salty about my experience trying to test drive a used Ioniq 6. It was on the site for like $23k I think. I reserved it and then got an email saying that they'd already sold it, but they have a new one available to see for like $55k. I like my Bolt EUV a lot, but Ioniq 6 was my first choice, and I've since only discovered more reasons to be envious lol. My 50kW level 3 charging is incredibly sluggish compared to the 300ish that they can do, even if it's rare for me to have to use it at all.

I have a lot of buttons and switches, but I have to tap the screen to select and deselect HVAC vents. That's annoying while driving. There's a button for max defog, but I don't want to keep cycling that on and off. Just give me a damn knob.

You see, Europeans cannot have the Cybertruck. Americans cannot have the R5. I can live with that, but then, I am European.

Isn't there Renault 4/5 or Kia EV 2 in USA? They seem perfect

[-] driveway@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

No renaults at all, and no kia ev2 here. Affordable cars are pretty much completely gone from our market.

[-] VAK@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Oh damn, and with Chinese brands not allowed, its pretty much waiting for Japanese brands for you all
