If they stop donating to DHH and Omarchy sure I guess.

They stopped though, and omarchy is not on their sponsors page. I think they got the message

Yeah, it doesn't look like they ever donated directly to Omarchy. Not to say their association with DHH (the racist bigot at the helm of Omarchy) has never involved money though, as they listed a sizable sponsorship with Rails World, which platforms DHH. That said, it doesn't look like they've done any other sponsorships with Rails World since.

I went to check on whether they were still sponsoring Hyprland, a project which fosters a notoriously hateful community, and it looks like they've stopped their €600/month commitment and now instead report a lump sum of €7200, which could indicate that they stopped sponsoring them after 12 months. Too long IMO, but maybe there was some sort of contract involved that made it difficult for them to pull out. In any case, it's good to see they appear to have cancelled those gross affiliations.

I still hold reservations, as I'm not familiar with who is behind many of the other projects they're sponsoring. Given their failure to identify how problematic associations with DHH and Hyprland were, it leaves questions about whether they'll ensure their due diligence on sponsorships going forwards, (or worse, that they knew and didn't care until the community's uproar). I'm hopeful, but wary.

Maybe by the time I'm looking for a new laptop, I can consider framework.

Does @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org still simp for DHH?

If it weren't for the price of memory (and everything else), the FW12 would be an easy buy for me. It is equal to or surpasses my current 13th gen Intel laptop in every way aside from the display (an amazing OLED to a reddish LCD is not great), and I really want one of their fun colours, especially the purple one!

Maybe in the future I can get one for cheap in the used market? Framework's "neutral" stance (that is, their unwillingness to criticise DHH and Omarchy. Not nearly as bad as Dell and others, who more blatantly support such nasty politics, but still) bothers me, so buying used also means my money won't go directly to them.

Maybe in the future I can get one for cheap in the used market?

With the price of 5 year old framework 13s being what they are I doubt it. You can get a newer thinkpad for half the price.

For a moment I thought I would have to be the one to make the PSA thos time that Framework is cool with being a nazi bar. Thank you, stranger.

That looks like a really nice laptop. I don't play games and code only or write prose. This looks like my next laptop as soon as my old one dies (which is unlikely to happen anytime soon, it's incredible how long laptops last)

Alas my Surface Pro (running Linux) has shit the bed and I am not sure what to get, the Framework 12 or ... 13pro or Tuxedo 13pro where my choices and run the 13 as a desktop via TB dock at home and retire my actual desktop (an older mini pc).

The issue for me is I travel 7 or 8 months a year, the other 4 or 5 months the laptop sits in the bag at home doing nothing, so a pumped up laptop with TB used for both, or a cheaper travel laptop that sits idle for long periods ?

[-] illusionist@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

That's tricky! Both are fine.

I'd go for one good experience rather than one perfect and one mediocre and the additional pain of keeping both systems on par.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Do laptops last longer than desktops?

[-] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 days ago

Usually shorter. The better is the first thing to wear out, even if it's not used much. But it often can be replaced, even if the manufacturer doesn't officially support replacement.

Ignoring that, they are still built more compact, which makes some components more prone to failure (in particular cooling). But they can still last a decade+ if taken care of and/or repaired.

My current laptop is a decade old. As long as you don't buy bottom of the barrel and use it to spec, it'll last. It is primarily a web browser that can play some light games. I've got other systems for modern games. A gaming laptop will be out of date when you do the setup, however.

I have a Compaq CQ61 as a Debian "server" thing from around 2008. Does my IRC bouncer, Navidrome and Komga. Works fine on that purpose. My daily driver is a Thinkpad T430, not sure what model year, at least a decade old, maybe more. Got it second hand. Works well for me, I can play Morrowind. Thats all that matters.
