Probably would’ve ended him up in some legal trouble somehow but still lame. It’s not to hard to do something like that anonymously but I suppose they wanted the clout and 5 second fame — can’t get that if you use an anonymous account.

They could also just be someone who wasn't that familiar with gaming beyond playing the game and such ideas didn't even occur to them and so they returned it as the default setting.

Also, if they leaked it would they have gotten that sick bric-a-brac? Some dudes love that bric-a-brac shit.

If they had no idea he had it, there's almost zero risk of him getting caught.

Rip it, compress it, upload it to a public file share through a VPN, and then go silent.

Then enjoy the renaissance of fan content.

You can, but this particular redditor isn't as creative as us class master OPSEC bandoes.

In a better reality, Blizzard would've studied the code and fallen in love with the things that made Blizzard successful in the first place; a decent fucking game.

Then, they would've released the source code on GitHub as a "thank you".

The fans, admiring what Blizzard had done, happily supported the company & Microsoft never bought it, because Microsoft had spent all of their money creating a space prison for the corporate elite & corrupted leaders of Earth.

And everyone but those in the Space Prison lived happily ever after, and Earth didn't become yet another dead rock orbiting a flaming ball of gas, floating through the cosmos inside of the mouth of a turtle with 4 elephants on its back.

Ermm, I skimmed your comment and I didn't see the part about how this would bring value to the shareholders, did you even think about the shareholders? /s

IMO all consumer software should forcibly become open source after 10 years. Companies have 10 years to make a fuckton of money from it. That also means they have 10 years to innovate enough so that once the source code is released they will still have something else to sell that is big enough of an improvement that people will still want to pay for it.

Otherwise you end up with stagnation and enshitification from companies controlling critical software and holding back entire industries like Adobe is.

In 2009, economist Rufus Pollock "did the math" and came up with an optimal copyright length of roughly 15-30 years (if I recall correctly, been a minute since I read the full paper):

https://rufuspollock.com/papers/optimal_copyright_term.pdf

This has been a known and solved problem, nobody with power to change it wants to change it because they're currently benefiting from it.

Some people really love monopolies, and it shows when they ignore history, and theory.
You're remaking clans, which leads to clan wars, which leads to kingdoms, which lead to empires.

All software should be free. All blob reversed engineered. Let everyone decide how they run their machines.

This should be all media and patents. No one invents something alone. Everyone stands on all of our shoulders.

[-] basiclemmon98@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 6 days ago

Say what you will, but redditors also made the megathread, so it may counterbalance-

[-] alapakala@quokk.au 15 points 6 days ago

Bootlicker behavior.

[-] errer@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Can decompile it nowadays, so may not matter so much anymore

[-] alapakala@quokk.au 2 points 6 days ago

Then DMCA snitches are next.

[-] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 2 points 6 days ago

Decompiles aren't DMCAable

Overdrive is not even a decompilation project lmao, it was DMCAd because it offers a way to bypass DRM on games.

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
