I saw this sign at the top of the gondola at a ski area and I fucking love it.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Lol is that a warning or a threat?

[-] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 115 points 3 days ago

Knowing how those things are built, the blood probably came from handling the fucking sheet metal casing while setting it up lol

[-] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 19 points 3 days ago

Fuck first blood what about first thumb?

[-] CheesyFingers@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago

Probably the next day. lol

It has a hunger that only body parts will satisfy.

[-] SparroHawc@piefed.world 71 points 3 days ago

I feel like most shop equipment should have a similar plaque.

At a Danish boarding school (think hippies more than Eaton) on the wall next to the drill press in the woodshop:
a piece of scalp with long hair
A "subtle" reminder to wear a hair-net when working with rotating equipment.

I took shop class in jr high. There was a dried spray of blood on the wall behind the band saw. First day of class the shop teacher pointed it out while clarifying that the safety rules were there for a reason. At some point in the previous years the room had been repainted, but that section was left alone to leave the blood on the wall.

That was 1985. I'm guessing today it would be properly cleaned, but everyone in the class would have taken pictures to share anyway.

My junior high shop class was in 1980. Both teachers were missing fingers, although I don't think they lost them in the junior high shop.

Incidentally, this was when Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" was playing regularly on the radio. The other kids in shop class achieved the rapture whenever it came on, singing along especially loudly to the "we don't need no education" line. I'm not sure Roger Waters ever really grasped why The Wall was so successful in the US.

Yeah, that's a song I both love and hate. Love it because it was obvious he wasn't really talking about education but "education" aka "thought control" as he specifies in the song itself. Hate it because I'm sure it contributed to the anti-intellectualism we see today because so many people thought he meant like math class instead of the propaganda kids in schools were fed like "it's good to sign up for the military to fight in some foreign war". Which applied specifically in the case of the character the wall was about because he was constantly told at school that the father that abandoned him was a hero for it and he was bad for not being happy about it, which just became another brick in the wall.

Today it wouldn't be there because all the tools would be in storage and the room repurposed for some other kind of class.

(Source: I took AP Physics circa 2000 in the large room that used to be my school's shop, and wished I could've had the chance to use the equipment. It even had two generations of equipment -- manual table saws and such stuffed in a large walk-in closet, and CNC mills, oscilloscopes, and other sorts of "high-tech" stuff still sitting out -- and none of it was still being used.)

Depends on the school. The high school my kids graduated from offered all forms of trade classes, from home maintenance to welding, cabinetry, auto, etc. They graduated in 2017, 19, & 20.

There was a moment in time several years back where there was talk of cutting back on those classes, but a large enough group of students kept enrolling in them, so the classes stayed.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My school system did have a high school like that, but it was only one for the whole county and you had to transfer to it instead of going to your normal zoned school. And it was only for kids trying to learn a trade, which meant it didn't offer stuff like AP classes. So yeah: if you were a a "smart" kid planning on college, you didn't get to have any hands-on sorts of classes. It's fucked up.

Unused CNC mills? Damn. When I was in college I did an internship at IBM's TJ Watson research center. They had so much fantastic shit and nowhere to store it. There was a scanning (or a tunneling?) electron microscope sitting in the hallway outside of our lab.

In the late naughties, I worked at a facility that had a server room with very visible scorch marks around an outlet for the entire four years I was there. I realize that's not a biohazard but I still wouldn't rely on an organization cleaning up.

My grandfather (born 1928) cut his thumb off in high school shop class. Ran it thru a table saw.

I wonder where Dave is now.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

If he was using power tools in a shop, I'd guess his minimum age would be like 14 at the time, which would make his minimum age today about 63 if I did my math correctly. But that's just the minimum age, if we take the median age of US men over 14 in 1977 (or a sloppy estimate), that number is in the high 30s, putting the expected age for Dave in his late 80s, which is higher than the average life expectancy for the entire period of his life. So my guess is that Dave didn't make it to today.

[-] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I expected him to not be with us today as well.

He left something behind though. The plaque might have outlived him, and if not, we're still talking about him. Dave, as of now, is still alive.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Can't believe I missed this opportunity earlier.

Dave's not here, man.

[-] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Hopefully not smeared across a dozen bandsaw blades.

Never let your name be part of a new rule.

[-] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 66 points 3 days ago

Unless you get to name the thing.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 26 points 3 days ago

Well, that's the point, Thag can't enjoy being a celebrity.

Point... ha. I didn't intend that, btw.

[-] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago

I have nine reasons you need to respect the shop equipment because I forgot one.

[-] toynbee@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Ever heard of the Perkins bros?

Please feel free to! However, to summarize, they are a construction company with a YouTube channel. They make videos of themselves building houses. One of the members of their team let his hand get caught in, iirc, a jointer; as you might expect, the hand was destroyed. He now has a prosthetic hand, which occasionally features in the videos, but as you might expect he is a avid supporter of prosthetics charities.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
