That sign hits hard.

Rough translation: "I want to live, not survive"

Maybe an English tweak to keep the similarity of words "I want to live, not be lavish"

It's actually insane if you dig a little deeper: There is this website. Yes, it's flashy. But there seems to be one webdesigner behind this and not some organization or "the german youth". It really does seem to be one guy and you can't find much about him online. He doesn't seem to give interviews or be active in searchable social media? And that's it. Not sure how this is international news or why somebody would warn against violence here.

France-style

distanced itself from the violence

pick one.

[-] saltesc@lemmy.world 24 points 14 hours ago

I like riots in Athens. Plenty of things get destroyed, but generally just something associated with the government. You could park your car in the middle of one and it'll be fine, but the signage, bins, bus stop, etc. nearby, probably torn down and set on fire. There's always the strong sent of fuel and tear gas, but everyone's property stays nice and safe...mostly

[-] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 17 points 14 hours ago

instead of destroying bus stops they should demonstrate at the parliament. best chance to be heard by politicians if they suddendly miss their appointments

[-] saltesc@lemmy.world 9 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

they should demonstrate at the parliament

That's the standard.

Water, food, gas mask, head to "the square" and be prepared to fight in for a couple of kilometres.

Been like that for 2,500 years.

The bus stops are destroyed along with other things along the way, to be used as barracades.

That is the difference between forceful, possibly violent protest and just plain old hooliganism and crime (plundering small local stores + selling loot).

[-] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 17 points 14 hours ago

Typically German. Admire the French Revolution, but denigrate the Guillotine. That's how you get things like the German Revolution of 1848, where the revolutionaries thought it was a good idea to hold talks with nobility instead of beheading them. Nobility stayed in power, to nobody's (except the revolutionaries') surprise.

[-] arrow74@lemmy.zip 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

You must understand that the nobles did not put a beheading into their personal schedules. Nothing could be done you cannot expect someone to attend an unscheduled event

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 14 points 13 hours ago

I agree with the sentiment you're trying to express, but this is wrong. The French equivalent of the German Revolution of 1848 wasn't the French Revolution; it was... the French Revolution of 1848, where despite the French being meaningfully more radical than the Germans (mostly because German liberals wanted what French liberals were revolting against) essentially the same dynamic happened. What happened in 1848 basically everywhere was that the liberals and socialists won the fight against the conservatives but then the liberals (the people who held talks with the nobility in Germany) wanted to take the ball and run with it while leaving the socialists holding the bag. The socialists were mighty miffed about this and tried to launch a second revolution, and the liberals won that fight but without their radical flank (which they had irreparably alienated by, you know, shooting them dead) were vulnerable to counterrevolution by the conservatives. This same story happened in France BTW, which is how the Second French Republic became the Second French Empire, so it's unfair to specifically blame the Germans here. Less seriously, blaming mid-19th century Germany for not producing good revolutionaries is definitely a strat gestures at Karl Marx.

Edit: The role of the guillotine (and general revolutionary terror) in the French Revolution is also highly exaggerated. The revolutionaries had already defeated the conservative aristocracy by 1793 (they'd be restored to power only after the defeat of Napoleon), and if anything the rampant executions weakened the Revolution and lead to its backtracking in the Thermidorian Reaction. If you want to learn more about either of these revolutions I highly Mike Duncan's Revolutions Podcast, which has a multiple dozen episode series for each.

[-] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 4 points 14 hours ago

Seems to be a recurring theme in German revolutions.

[-] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 1 points 13 hours ago

It is a treasured tradition, unfortunately.

[-] jimmy90@lemmy.world 0 points 6 hours ago

right? setting fire to stuff is the point so it benefits the afd

right commie?

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 13 hours ago

I mean, it's hard to say that the violence is an important or effective part of the French protests. Really the important part of a protest like this is disruption, and while this can be violent it doesn't have to be. There's nothing inherently violent about a general strike, for example. It's fine as long as the protestors have an concrete and realistic idea of what they're trying to do and how it's meant lead to what they want.

[-] brainwashed@feddit.org 1 points 13 hours ago

Nonviolent but let's please loot some Apple Stores still! /s

[-] Ooops@feddit.org 1 points 9 hours ago

I would, but a) I have no clue where to even find one and b) what would I do with that e-waste?

PS: Looked it up and living right in the center of the Rhein-Ruhr area there doesnt seem to be one here or in neighbouring cities. Guess I can go to Düsseldorf or Köln...

[-] Ooops@feddit.org 3 points 9 hours ago

Sure...

"Let's meet peacefully in some pedestrian zones on a weekend, so we are not inconvenient for anyone. PS: only GenZ allowed." is totally a "France-style" "mass" protest. 😂

Personally I actually refuse to even call it a protest at all. It's performance art to feel better about yourself while not actually getting anywhere (and yes, I already was massively downvoted for that opinion elsewhere, as most Germans indeed seem to live in the insane delusion that doing everything exactly as they always did it will totally lead to change somehow...)

[-] BigShammy80@feddit.org 10 points 14 hours ago

Big ass protests are long overdue!

[-] Ooops@feddit.org 4 points 9 hours ago

We had massive protests against the political shift to the right with millions in the streets in multiple cities (each) and the reaction was literaly: Get fucked, we will cuddle with the far-right even harder!

So being the complacent sheep they are the protester just went all back home.

What's wrong with big asses?

[-] UncleOb@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago

About time we start protesting. Young people are absolutely fucked and since society in general is getting on average older and older government policies tend to cater to the most voters i.e. not us.

[-] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 13 hours ago

ABOUT TIME! and i say that as a german!

[-] jdr@lemmy.ml 3 points 13 hours ago

Ich will leben... NICHT!

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 13 hours ago

a non violent one will not make the ones in power suddenly scared if they see no threat to thier livelyhoods.

[-] mlatu@moist.catsweat.com 0 points 14 hours ago

Roßkopf also warned that radicals and extremists could insert themselves among demonstrators in order to "attack police" or "simply be destructive."

yeah RIGHTWING radicals and extremists most likely

[-] mlatu@moist.catsweat.com 2 points 13 hours ago

by which im not saying "thats only nazis who want to protest there"

im saying: "make sure you dont get pulled into bullshit by LARPers" (LinksAgitierende Rechtskuschelnde Personen)

[-] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 13 hours ago
