You know what doesn't flip votes because of shitty proprietary software written by idiots who couldn't program a ATM?

Fucking paper and mail in voting.

Slop article that puts rigging in scare quotes to predispose people into disbelieving it, and acts as though the state's canned bullshit is a valid response worth reporting. What a fucking joke.

Again, I hate defending newsweek because yeah, they don't exactly put out great and insightful articles but damn, here I go because I think you're wrong in your premise.

  1. Journalists put things in quotes or put things like "purported" in headlines like this to provide some distance between their reporting of a person's claim and not present it as fact which would put them in the sights of a libel suit, especially with this batch of sue happy morons in power. Not saying that there's not disingenuous journalists that abuse this for fear mongering but I don't believe this is the case here.

  2. Yeah, not a great article I do agree, it's a bunch of BS fluff all around the substance but this seems to be the only source that's reporting on what the Tennessee office's non-response response which I think is worth noting and without this crap article, which I agree is mostly complete bullshit, unfortunately I would not have know that they were being shitty in their official capacity, which is what I think should be discussed and brought to light. I mean I'm not watching the Tennessee's office for a response and neither are you.

It's more often a matter of following the publication's style guide than such a comprehensive level of CYA.

And quite a few publications don't do that and aren't sued any more than the ones who do.

I think we're on the same side of this issue overall, I just don't think that our current media's end-all-be-all quest for "neutrality" above all else is in any way helpful. Journalists should be digging into issues, performing real investigations, speaking truth to power, not just parroting out the most basic surface-level facts.

Absolutely correct. Notice they conveniently forget to use quotes if it’s something that agrees with their narrative or they’ll just use the whole quote rather than manipulate it.

We do agree on the premise that the Tennessee's government response is complete bullshit.

I just hate seeing what I consider unjustified attacks on journalists, even if they have fallen by the wayside with overall quality, tenacity, and quality in the age of the internet. I don't think it's fair for someone to say a journalist is being disingenuous when they put something in quotes as they're covering up or helping justify a Conservative government's bad response.

Yeah, the whole seeking to be neutral is a bit problematic to be sure but I just don't get that intention here since this type of headline writing has been done forever and notwithstanding a person's account that cannot be directly verified isn't fact under a court of law unfortunately.

I don't distrust her account of what happened at all and while I would consider it to be valid and a fact, under the eyes of the law, it's still a she said/he said type of thing and just my opinion, simply reporting what the government shit response was is speaking truth to power in shining that light on them. I just wish the journalist stopped right there and didn't continue on with the Entertainment Tonight fluff that really lessened the the impact.

Great conversation, have a good one!
