The way I see it, anarchy is essentially small communities getting together to build their own tiny democracies.

I think The Walking Dead graphic novel really shows what anarchy would become. Essentially, everyone would have to have a role in those societies based on their skills and knowledge. Everyone would take care of each other. Decisions would be made through councils with the members of that community where they would debate and vote on key decisions. I think there would still be some form of leadership to steer the community.

People who don't follow the community rules, or act in a manner that is detrimental to the well being of the community would face trial by the community and quickly get expelled. This would be the worst punishment, because you lose access to all the resources, services, and help this community provides.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though. I'm not some scholar on anarchism.

Just because you intend for one outcome doesn't the other won't happen as a result

[-] CobraCommander@quokk.au 5 points 2 hours ago

Becuase you intend for one outcome does not mean the other will happen as a result either.

Anarchism is not about a ruleless chaotic wasteland, it’s about people being empowered to create the rules together and work for the wellbeing of their community.

So advocating for participation in one's local government?

Advocating for the dissolution of heirachical government and implementation of horizontal societal structures.

All you have to do is look at shopping cart returns to know that people aren't capable of self governance.

State flavoraid tastes good

What incentive do people have to return a shopping cart when they have no sense of ownership or say in the supermarket and are getting ripped off by a corporation?

Simply because something fails under capitalism does not translate to it failing under other systems.

Solidarity with the laborers for one, and this one doesn't even consistently fail under capitalism

[-] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 hour ago

Because it's the right thing to do. Not for the company, but for the other people using the parking lot.

Many people won't even take 15 seconds and a few extra steps to do something helpful for other people that doesn't directly benefit them.

The shopping cart return epidemic is vastly overblown and not nearly as much of an issue as memes make it seem.

Also it is kind of a US thing while it works in europe (dunno about the rrst of the world) and if anything that just shows that people are capable of learning stuff like that qnd acting collectively

[-] kibiz0r@midwest.social 3 points 4 hours ago

Wait what? There is actually a thing where people don’t return shopping carts? I thought it was a metaphor or a joke. I’ve lived in the US my whole life and I’ve probably seen less than a dozen unreturned carts. Am I in a strange bubble?

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 25 minutes ago

I think it's pretty location dependent, but I agree, it's not a very big issue where I am at least. Where I am you still see them, but it's not a massive issue. It'll only be a few, if any.

Apparently, or you shop at stores where the workers are good about retrieving them. I probably see at least half a dozen stray carts every time I go to a store that has carts (fewer for smaller stores, more for larger), and I've definitely had a few roll into my car. I've lived in several different states and it seems identical everywhere. My partner works at a small grocery store and confirms that it's a constant, all-day battle to gather the carts left all over the parking lot and surrounding area.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

If you consider how many people visit the store in a given day a dozen out of place carts is nothing. So yes, using this as a metic, a few people are incapable of self governance; the rest would be fine.

To be fair, the shopping cart thing is largely a problem in America where we've been conditioned to believe everyone takes care of themselves first and foremost. Compassion can be taught, but it'd take a lot longer than we have in the US before everything goes to shit. If we took the leashes off of the American population right now, we'd have maybe 40% of the people acting like the bottom picture, while the rest would quickly decimate everything trying to take as much for themselves as possible, resulting in the top picture. They're not exclusive scenarios.

[-] dangling_cat@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago

You should absolutely take care of yourself first. The difference is whether you protect other people’s self-care or not.

[-] Signtist@bookwyr.me 1 points 2 hours ago

Fair, it's my own upbringing as an American bleeding through - when we think of "take care of yourself first" we almost always tack on a "neglect everyone else in your attempts to do so."

[-] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 hours ago

i'll return the shopping cart when it's not part of a capitalist enterprise.
