So, who's the alternative?

From what I hear Tuta is only barely reputable? Something about false cryptography. Services like mailbox and posteo don't have a free tier. The offerings overall seem to be so bad that gmail is beginning to look somewhat desirable by this point.

Not that it impacts much in the short term. Until a long-term viable alternative shows up, the best I can do is to continue using Proton's free tier so that I am at least somewhat a cents / nickels cost to them rather than a profit.

Lotta discussion about alternatives.

For email I recommend runbox.com. They just do email, that's it. worker owned, geothermal powered, based in Norway which has better privacy laws than EU and no ChatControl.

For all else, find a NextCloud provider -- there are tons. Even a couple of free ones.

Because they're trying to find those idiots that mess up the codebase by using ai, right?

Right?

Can recommend mailfence.com for email, calendar, addressbook.

Reasonably priced, publish yearly transparency reports, support email encryption, don't do bullshit add-ons, have shown to be stable about their principles throughout the years I've been their customer.

I had been planning to move to proton. Definitely won’t be now.

Fastmail? Mailbox.org?

[-] wilmo@programming.dev 18 points 7 hours ago

I moved off of Proton to Mailbox.org maybe 6 months or so ago. No complaints. Much happier tbh.

[-] lemmyng@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Seconded. Still need to move the last bit of my mail to Mailbox.org. I'd also recommend Fastmail, Tutanota, Disroot, and Mailfence.

And a VPN alt, too? 😅

[-] WhiplashPost@programming.dev 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

tutanota is good

Edit: I have learned that perhaps they are not.

First mullvad and now proton. Sheeeesh.

So now this is an alternative email thread, right?

Astermail? Fastmail?

Are both also shoving ai down their employees throats and/or guving money to fascists?

Is my only hope hosting and maintaining my own email service?

[-] WalleyeWarrior@midwest.social 3 points 3 hours ago

Proton has been sketchy for years. Like every 6 months the get dragged for unethical shit but somehow everyone is surprised each time

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 17 points 6 hours ago

We’ve known about Proton for way longer then Mullvad. CEO has had TDS for a while now; the AI pivot is like the last 5 degrees of the heelturn. Same with Omarchy and Brave.

[-] Makhno@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago

What happened with Mullvad?

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

One of the owners is a ~~liberta~~ ~~anarch~~ isolationist who donate to a right-wing anti-immigrant political party, pretty much single-handedly keeping it going, iirc. The company distanced themselves but did not apologize or say ‘fuck one of our owners’ so people are not sure what to make of it.
Don’t know what it has to do with AI though.

[-] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 24 points 7 hours ago

one of the owners is a fascist

[-] lemmyng@lemmy.world 11 points 6 hours ago

And donated the company's earnings heavily to pro-fascist movements.

Fastmail seems fairly sensible about AI:

https://www.fastmail.com/blog/not-written-with-ai/

Their email service itself is excellent, and I appreciate that they recently introduced the option to move your account's data storage out of the USA into the EU. But they're not an encrypted service like Proton or Tuta.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 7 hours ago

Posteo is a decent one that friends of mine use

[-] MIXEDUNIVERS@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 7 hours ago

i use posteo but wanted to switch to something else with more aliases but. it works there is no kontroversie... so 1€ per month is good.

[-] exdor@programming.dev 1 points 6 hours ago

This is so vague we dont even know if it's a good thing

[-] belated_frog_pants@beehaw.org 2 points 3 hours ago
