I understand people liked this, but plots that rely on everyone being stupid and/or neglegent at every opportunity is infinitely irritating...

Too reminiscent of real life?

Lol.

Quite the opposite - not everyone is stupid and negligent at every turn. More like we all get to do those things occasionally.

I get movies aren't necessarily realistic (especially something like this), but stuff like this kills any suspension of disbelief.

I personally dont mind it in films, I quite like a series of unfortunate events personally, but I get it. Ans couldn't resist the joke :p

The Netflix series is much, much better than this train wreck. Still fun, though, in its own way.

Maybe that explains why I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. It just didn't hold my attention.

The issue is that the narration has a very strong voice in the books that pulled the story through the slower bits. The movies didn't incorporate that (mostly cause they were covering 3 books in a single movie) and it lost a lot of the charm that made the stories work. The series included a narrator character that brought those elements back in, and they're some of my favorite parts of the show.
