The biggest problem with that generation of hardware is not that the hardware itself is incapable, but that nvidia has dropped driver support for it, which makes it harder to keep your systems up to date.

but it's hardly what you'd call a viable proposition - not at the $198 paid for the modded GPU

Ya. A used 3050 is cheaper than that, still has 8 outputs and 8gb of VRAM. Its cool to see this done as a hobby project but it sounds like this guy just bought it as is, so what's the point?

8 outputs? In a consumer card?

[-] TheSecondVariety@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

They both have 4, I just screwed it up.

Analog output! It can be connected to a crt.

Cheap practice for RAM soldering I'd assume

The person mentioned in the article bought it like that. This wasn't practice, they spend $200 on an old ass modified card instead of paying the same amount for a newer and better card with the same outputs and ram. It's stupid.

I have two of these but the 4GB models for my servers! They're great when you just need something to display console text to the screen but don't have an iGPU

[-] DdCno1@beehaw.org 11 points 2 days ago

I'd argue they are overkill for that, almost to a ridiculous degree.

I'm definitely open to suggestions but what other GPUs are there that are under $100 CAD and can fit into a 2u chassis?

[-] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 2 days ago

GT 610/710 are my go-to, but they are not massively cheaper, at least not anymore. I've got a few of these left though (and an equivalent Radeon or two that I forgot the name of), just in case I need a basic display adapter.

Edit: Oh I didn't notice this was a hobby project. I thought Nvidia brings the old cards back.

Oh boy, I had the 2GB variant! It was my first Nvidia card after long time, because at that time Nvidia worked better on Linux. Right now the RAM is the most expensive component of a videocard. If I was about to buy 8gb variant, then it would be a modern card. I can't imagine a 750 Ti being useful with 8gb, if there are alternatives clocking much faster at comparable prices.

One may be surprised as to how many games today will run on GPUs such as 660s even. Just don't get your hopes up to make it run everything you throw at it.
