They should be forced to replant the whole area, and pay for it.

They should be forced to replant the same number of trunk diameter-inches. (Or diameter-meters, I guess, being in Finland.) In other words, for every 1' diameter tree they remove, they should have to plant 12 1" saplings (either back on the same site or elsewhere when they run out of space).

They should have to plant back the same sized trees and replant wherever they sourced the trees from.

Replant the area and fund maintenance and custodianship until the forest reaches the state it was in before they clear-cut it. As well as conservation efforts to protect the surrounding areas until that point is reached.

Should also be at the same site, since there is no garantuee other locations will be as favorable to host a forest.

Surface area of cross section of (1) 12" trunk: 113.1 square inches

Surface area of cross section of (12) 1" trunks: 9.42 square inches

The percent change from the single 12" trunk to the twelve 1" trunks is a decrease of 91.67%.

I know it isn't the same cross-sectional area. I was just suggesting the same as how my local government does tree recompense.

He said diameters. He didn't say areas.

Good idea! Send them to prison, then add part of the sentence, they must go out and plant 250 thousand trees.

[-] bookmeat@fedinsfw.app 4 points 2 days ago

And the same species and in same proportion as they cut down.

[-] cenzorrll@piefed.ca 5 points 2 days ago

And fund its conservation until it reaches an equivalent state to before it was clearcut.

[-] redballooon@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

And only then they get the permit to deforest it.

[-] KC_Royalz@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago

They should set a precedent here. $1 billion per tree

Something fun about Finland is that most of their criminal Justice system has "day fines", i.e. the fine is based on losing a day's labour etc. I have no idea if that holds true for corporations but if so...

We should fine Google to 10 - 12 billion Euros. It would make our economy better.

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

50 billion. They want the cheap cold climate

[-] pr06lefs@lemmy.ml 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

put MFers in prison please

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

Will there be actual jail sentences is it going to be the usual fines that companies treat as cost of doing businesses and can even declare as expenses in order to reduce the taxes they pay?

[-] A_norny_mousse@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Right now I wonder if construction is/remains stopped until the matter is resolved. That would really show them to stop messing with local law.

edit: it looks like this is the case ✊ - for how long though.

[-] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago

Rip them APART

[-] FireWire400@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Holy shit, I genuinely didn't expect them to care. Good on ya, Finland!

I hope the plans for the data centre are suspended indefinitely, at the very least.

[-] random_character_a@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Every day this is on hold they are losing shit ton of money.

[-] A_norny_mousse@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago

And I hope it stays that way until the matter is resolved. Much better deterrent than fines.

We need to teach big multinationals that they can't just ignore local law.
