Google last year was the most profitable company in the history of humanity. Analysts expected it to continue to grow

Perpetual growth expectations are absurd. There is no level of profit they'll be satisfied with

[-] curtly533@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 hours ago

That’s a shame. Anyways.

[-] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 9 points 17 hours ago

Gosh. Maybe I shouldn't be blocking all those ads.

Naaaahhhhhhh!

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 3 points 14 hours ago

It's not like the bloated corpo hellbeast that is YouTube gives the people making the videos a fair share of that

[-] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Why can't companies operate on a sustainable revenue model? Why does it always need to be constant growth year over year?

[-] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 hours ago

They can. They won't go out of business or anything, they'll do just fine.

Their stock won't be valued at 1000x earnings tho, and their CEOs will stop becoming billionaires from stock options. They'll also stop being the main driving force of the US stock increases.

They'll also have to start giving out dividends and become real companies, not just a promise.

[-] FunnyUsername@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

it's because it's literally illegal for fiduciary actors to NOT persue the highest profits possible. this is the CORE REASON AMERICAN CAPITALISM IS AN OROBOROS

[-] northendtrooper@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 hours ago

Greed. Its always greed.

[-] CoconutLove@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

Because investors make the most money on the value of the company increasing. The higher the revenue, the higher the value of the company.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

since the late 90's. I mean its always been the case but then it got sorta stupid and the mentality just grew and grew.

It's almost like flooding your ad saturated platform with AI content, while simultaneously punishing and alienating genuine creators, is a bad idea.

[-] Lydon_Feen@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago

I've had my YouTube adblocked for quite some time now.

Fuck them and their disgusting practices.

[-] jj4211@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I have to actually be thankful to the flood of AI slop content in my feed.

It was the final push I needed to stop trying to randomly browse YouTube and use my time in more interesting ways.

[-] GuyDudeman@lemmy.world 57 points 2 days ago

They need to stop having unrealistic expectations of constant growth. But tell that to any cancer and see where it gets you.

[-] marxismtomorrow@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago

Capitalism, like all pyramid schemes, requires constant exponential growth in order to function. It can be temporarily allayed with reforms, but if you miss the mark to transition it to socialism, it just is cancer and will kill whatever society it has infected.

It's a terrible fact it's a necessary step in societal development, but we have long since found the cure and roughly the right time to excise the tumor.

[-] inari@kbin.earth 11 points 1 day ago

Thing is they'd be growing if not for AI spending

Maybe they should focus on making a great platform instead of a shitty one. Just an idea.

[-] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

It was great in 2006. That's why Google bought it.

[-] gothmog@lemmy.today 17 points 1 day ago

I've jumped ship to nebula and dropout. Spending less money for what I actually want and also getting zero ads and slop.

[-] Joelk111@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

When I read stuff like this, I realize people use YouTube very differently to me. I follow creators and those creators are not on other platforms. This means that jumping ship to other platforms is not an option unless I want to start watching 90% new stuff.

I also already watch stuff on Nebula & Dropout in addition to the YouTube creators I enjoy.

[-] gothmog@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Oh that's the thing. 95% of all the creators I enjoy are already on one of those two platforms.

[-] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 20 points 1 day ago

Have they tried cramming unskipable ads everywhere?

[-] mcv@lemmy.zip 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

My ad blocker still skips them.

What it doesn't block is shorts. I need something to block those too.

[-] Ydna@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

There's a few browser plug-ins that will try to block em. But shorts still creep through sometimes...they're insidious

[-] REDACTED@infosec.pub 17 points 2 days ago
[-] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

YouTube tried to feed me a Caesar Milan video (abusive dog trainer, may not have spelled his name correctly), so I pulled it up in order to block the channel.

There was no way to block it. Now YouTube thinks I like that asshole.

[-] Pratai@piefed.ca 13 points 1 day ago

I’m sure it has something to do with the AI slop it’s become.

[-] USSEthernet@piefed.social 13 points 1 day ago
[-] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

You know, those 5 videos every 2 minutes that talk about meta glasses, gambling, and GLP-1s

[-] USSEthernet@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

No, I wouldn't know because I don't see this garbage you speak of.

[-] frunch@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Maybe they should make their site another fucking endless scroll where they blend videos with shorts and memes, making it more like every other social media site 🫠

[-] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

As someone that pays for premium, my subscription is very very VERY vaguely tenable at best.

It is worth the price of access but just barely, it is a case of it the quality dips any further or the price increases even slightly then I will be back to the old path.

Alas, with Google intent on closing the side loading gap on android, things like Newpipe are going to go the way of the Dodo.

[-] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago
  • Morphe patcher for YouTube
  • Load a custom ROM like Lineage or Graphene to get off the Google play services teat and leave the certification crap behind
[-] sealhaslupus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

drop the premium and apply an ad blocker. that will make it more bearable. premium isn’t really premium if you’re not feeling like you’re getting a good deal.

I use DNS blocking and have NextDNS and AdGuard DNS on different devices. Both have clear instructions on how to set up.

Or even easier get Wipr if you’re on Apple devices. Android has even more options.

[-] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

My big issue is that I use a lot of stuff offline and I have found that many of the downloader options to be limited. Not the fault of the app developers, they are fighting against a service that is constantly changing the back end to prevent them from being consistent.

I like said, I think Google is looking to start locking this down big time in the coming years. They have accepted that people will use all kind of means to get around downloading content and skipping ads so long as the business is growing. But as it plateaus and their dream of AI become much more realistic, the squeeze to lock everything down is going to get much harder in years to come.

I said it years back, wouldn't be surprised if many websites and services just become a giant webASM blob so that it makes scraping information near impossible. Roll content and AD's into a single DNS and have the web blob handle all the splits internally.

I have only had premium for many 4 months now and I am probably only going to use it for a month or more at this stage. It is fine but there just isn't enough to justify it.

[-] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

With s plethora of options to block ads on desktop, mobile, and TV, why give an evil company money?

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

What do you recommend for TV?

[-] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 3 points 18 hours ago

Get an android box and run SmartubeTV.

[-] No_Ones_Slick_Like_Gaston@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I'm in the US and got the Wal-Mart $60 onn 4K box with smart tube and custom launcher. Had to get another for the room TV, excellent experience.

Also this allowed me to kill the native wifi ecosystem the "smart" TV was using.

Can't look back without thinking should've done it earlier.
