Reasons why BSDs especially NetBSD getting more users or first time trying users.

I didn't watch the video but I hope the Proton CEO had low blood sugar while saying this bs it is egregious.

Are there any good news even lately. Every day I wake up to a new CVE, the list of things in the post title isn't encouraging either.

CVEs mean the issues are getting found and fixed instead of sitting on a three letter agency arsenal.

and all the end-user has to do is update.

[-] lukalix98@programming.dev 12 points 1 day ago

I agree, but it does not make my job any easier trying to keep up with fixing systems that management refused to update before.

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

well, it's our job. (and management can have the broken systems they wanted to, see if i care)

Serbia recently democratically ousted their fascist leadership and are in the process of replacing it with people from a curated list of teachers and professionals that students have spent the last few years compiling via open democratic debate.

They're making a technocracy? Cool!

There's something interesting, if not encouraging:

AlpineBSD is an operating system based on the NetBSD kernel with a userspace inspired by Alpine Linux and the objective to use as little AI-generated software as possible.

[-] racketlauncher831@lemmy.ml 3 points 23 hours ago

This is skeptical. NetBSD is already the most anti-AI BSD out there. They clearly ban AI-generated content (code and email). One exception is that their core team can sign off AI-generated pull requests, but so far they never did.

AlpineBSD has four tiers of exposure in their package registry so that the user can choose how tainted they want their system to be. This is less ideal if the goal is to not have slop in the system.

ElementaryOS is another choice

There are good news too, but those doesn't NEED to be told to everyone. A CVE is very important to get it out as fast and to many possible. But if something good happens, it doesn't have the urgency and need to reach everyone in short possible time. Plus bad news are for most people more interesting and get you clicks too, just to add to the fuel. And Ai doesn't help with that either.

Therefore its only natural that we see more bad news than good news.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
