This isn't anything new, it's how cops are trained...

Act 110% confident no matter what because sometimes people will start talking. Either admitting guilt or disclosing information they think works in their defense, only to be twisted as more cause.

Nothing you ever say to a cop will ever change the first thought that popped into their head. They're not trained to use critical thinking or logic, they're trained to do what they're told and that anything less than complete obedience justifies violence.

Police don't need an excuse to suspect you, they ALREADY suspect you.

What they need is something that doesn't work right to blame their mistakes on.

Flock fills that need. It used to be the drug dogs they could blame their incompetency's on, Flock is better.

They tell everyone and some just choice to ignore it

"Anything you say can and WILL be used against you in a court of law"

At no point do they tell you what you say will be entered in as evidence to help in your defense. So do what I do, STFU.

They definitely don't start off reading people their Miranda rights, though. By that point, many will have answered some of their many probing questions

And they will be harder to enter into evidence. Yeah they can use "Spontaneous Utterance" but thats not likely going to hold up if it was a direct question.

What I see a lot of is when people start free talking police will stop them and read the miranda warning to make it easier for the DA to use it against them.

Should be required viewing in any civics class in the US.

Cops don't investigate anymore. They jump to conclusions, ignore evidence, escalate the situation until they've beaten it half to death, then go for coffee and donuts. Should've just gone for the coffee and donuts in the first place.

...and then the DA backs them up by grossly overcharging in order to intimidate everyone into plea-bargaining, whether they're guilty or not. And even the court procedures themselves structurally incentivize pleading guilty for small offenses just because if you plead not guilty they make you show up to separate court dates for arraignment, transfer to a different court (because so many people plead that the first court isn't even set up to hold trials anymore) and arraignment again, finally the actual trial, etc.

When the courts have pretty much unanimously agreed that anything up to murder is on the table with no penalties, there is no incentive for them to even try to pretend to do their jobs properly, imo.

Occasionally, if it's really bad, they'll throw us a bone and pretend to give a shit about the rule of law, but, pretty rare at this point.

Based on a “bum steer”? Wtf is that expression?

Is that in the article somewhere? I don't see it.

Edit: Ah, I see: It's in the metadata that Lemmy shows beneath the headline.
