been looking for a community to write and discuss theoratical CS stuff. can I post it here?

there are other communities like: https://cs.stackexchange.com/ but don't know how friendly they are toward begginers.

That'd be great. "Programming" is a part of compsci and by itself, it's pretty limited if you ask me.

There's also !compsci@lemmy.world

I'd be happy to read those posts :)

I just created !PapersWeLove@programming.dev if you're interested in sharing/discussing academic CS papers.

Sure anything other than the 10th LLM discourse of the week.

[-] andioop@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

My home was programming.dev. Moved onto PieFed because it lets me add keyword filters so I can mostly browse without the LLM discourse. You better believe I have LLM, Claude, vibe-code filtered out. Even AI, although it does mean I'll have filtered out cool stuff from 2019 about how video game NPCs make decisions and other types of cool artificial decision-making that are not what is getting all the discourse.

I've started saying "NPC behavior" where I used to say "AI".

The state of the internet and how people talk to each other there is so bad that I thought you were talking about changing the words you use to snark at people (since people use "NPC" as an insult, although I have seen a different meme saying how it's genuinely nice to be an NPC just worrying about what sandwich you'll have for lunch instead of having main character worries). Took me a bit to realize you are genuinely just talking about changing your words when honestly speaking of a video game.

To further complicate matters I'm also a Dungeon Master, so I frequently play NPCs too.

What about my new AI powered B2B vibecoded delivery app start up idea?

[-] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Can you at least make it an AI powered B2B-coded vibe delivery app?

[-] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Of course they can't, they don't know how to code. Claude can probably do it for them though, but it's going to cost a lot of tokens for such a substantial rewrite.

As long it’s an intermediate platform that can milk the sellers and buyers with endless junk fees, count me in!

You have to subscribe to an api to access the customers and another api to access the location.

Not only yes, but imo, hell yes. I think a lot of what is missing from the dialog these days is talk about fundamentals. And all though that is for a reason practically (as things get higher level, we think of low level things less often), it loses out on some really fascinating topics. For example, how processors actually do cache, endianness, instruction sets, algorithms, etc., are all just fascinating topics to think about.

So my vote is, more of that.

[-] mesamunefire@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago

Yeah this isn't reddit. We just happy people are talking. Especially if its interesting stuff like CS.

I don't see why not, but I see there are several computer science communities, maybe better post there. My instance's community search tells me !compsci@lemmy.world is somewhat active (by Lemmy standards).

[-] Kissaki@programming.dev 7 points 3 days ago

!compsci@lemmy.world has 6 posts.

IMO, with so few posts, I would prefer a community here on the programming.dev instance, which is quite focused on programming/development. It would fit well.

Looks like there are two more existing compsci communities in the lemmyverse.

[-] 777Prawn@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago

I'm somewhat of a scientist myself.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

CS is one of the best sciences because tests are usually cheap.

[-] it_depends_man@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Hmmm... idk... Do you have a permit?

In all seriousness, as long as the communities are small and there is low traffic broader topics and questions are totally fine. Only if there is consensus that something is "too much" and repeated off topic will it make sense to split off and fragment.

The fediverse is friendly enough that you can try first, and if you're overstepping someone will politely ask you to not do it again.

[-] sexhaver87@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

You got a loicence for that quality posting?

[-] Kissaki@programming.dev 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I guess I don't know what kind of posts you mean specifically, but yes, please do.

"Programming" can be and is typically interpreted quite broadly. It's not just "writing code" but development in general, and entails computer science.

Looks like this programming.dev instance does not have a computer science community yet, but I would love to see one. Cross-posting is possible too.

Tangential, there's !experienced_devs@programming.dev, but that's a different branch even if it can entail compsci.

I would love to see more practice or science or theory or hands-on posts in this community.

In the end, there's the option of just trying and seeing what votes and comments tell; appreciation or rejection.

[-] admin@normals.me 2 points 2 days ago

Of course! Go for it. I don't know where you're looking at this from, whether it's a normal perspective or something else, but there are definitely good communities. But not Reddit XD

[-] Dialectical_Specialist@quokk.au 1 points 2 days ago

Most are glad to have any contributions, if worried, consider this a kind offer to use my community: !explicitsystems@quokk.au
