I'm glad for the game devs but this article's reporting is really confusing. 226% increase on what? They haven't released a game recently before this. Of course you're going to make money right after you release something new. A better comparison would be against the last quarter that they released a new game.

cool. when are they planning the layoffs?

[-] bitwise@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 days ago

I love that someone downvoted you for this when there's been a very real and recent trend of major studios and publishers chucking staff into the wind right after successful game launches.

[-] nyan_kas@piefed.social 20 points 2 days ago

Didn‘t downvote, but I think it’s an unfair generalization to suggest that a developer which isn’t owned by any major player in the gaming industry, hadn’t had any major layoffs in the past, and whose former CEO stepped down voluntarily after Firebreak flopped, will suddenly just start laying off people. I’m not claiming to know that it’s not going to happen, but right now it’s just a cynical take which doesn’t contribute to the discussion.

meh, ive worked in the game industry for two decades. I've been a part of 5 studio wide layoffs. im allowed to be salty.

[-] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Yeah but don't be so negative, this time surely it won't happen like it did all of the other times!

[-] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 19 points 2 days ago

you haven't lived until you've found out you lost your job through a kotaku article at 8 am while you're getting dressed.

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

Ah, the timeless class of the modern "employer". 🤌🏼

[-] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 9 points 2 days ago

its not just a recent trend. its pretty well established at this point.

[-] Jiral@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Where do you see a major game studio here?

[-] theyllneverfindmehere@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'm really happy for them. They should buy the distribution rights to Alan Wake 2 from the human weeny Tim Sweeny so they can actually make money off that game too...

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Also take back the full rights to Max Payne from Rockstar so Max can be incorporated into the overall Remedy universe. Control, Alan Wake, and Max Payne are supposed to all be in the same world.

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Don't forget about Quantum Break!

[-] Chrglstr143@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

Wow, so when you make a game that’s actually good you make money from it. Damn, EA and Ubi should take notes! I thought microtransactions are how you make money

[-] janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

At this point even if EA started miraculously making good games I wouldnt be buying them. Fuck kushner and fuck the saudis

[-] absquatulate@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sadly, microtransactions are how you make money these days. Remedy made 40million with this latest one and calling it their greatest success, but it's a fraction of the 24 billion that went into mtx only on pc this past year. Remedy is also much smaller then EA/Ubi and iirc privately owned, so the secret sauce may instead be good game + small overhead + no shareholders demanding infinite money.

Edit: i stand corrected, Remedy is publicly listed.

.+ be know already and have people anticipate your game.

If you are new on the scene and have a good game etc. You still need to break through the noise.

I have yet to play Resonant, but Control was such a nice surprise. I went in knowing nothing and ended up loving it.

[-] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

That was me, bought it to try out rat tracing, came out a huge fan of raybtracing AND control, and now Poets of the Fall/old gods of asguard is our favorite band

[-] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

Did you get better at drawing rats?

[-] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Drawing, no, but tracking them through miles of forest, absolutely

[-] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago
[-] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

It is funny, for years I went as Ratt Slayer, so branding is on point for me

[-] madmantis24@lemmy.wtf 2 points 2 days ago

I've been eager to play it under a similar mindset, but every time I load it up I have the Steam version refuse to launch with no feedback, and the GOG version says there isn't enough visual memory.

My GPU is either a 12 GB or 16 GB AMD card. Make it make sense!

[-] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

If you have an iGPU too, maybe it's trying to use the wrong one?

[-] madmantis24@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Maybe. I feel like I should dig into the settings for the game before I load it again. Does anyone know if Control had an .ini file or something like that? It's literally impossible to adjust the graphics settings through the options menu

[-] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

I'll take a look tomorrow! I know the path tracing stuff caused issues at first, that might be on by default. What resolution & refresh rate do you have? I'll try to make a config that fits.

Btw, you're on Windows or Linux?

[-] madmantis24@lemmy.wtf 1 points 3 hours ago

Linux, thank you. I don't know the specifics of my setup right now but I'll try and remember to update my reply when I get home and can look into it

[-] yumyumsmuncher@feddit.uk 10 points 2 days ago

Such a beautiful game

[-] TachyonTele_Esq@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

I wonder what percentage of people bought the game blind just because of Control.

Cuz I plan on being one of them.

[-] Numberone@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago

Me! I'm not mad at it either. The combat is completely different, but that's not a bad thing.

[-] TachyonTele_Esq@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Cool, I like the sounds of that. Different can be good.

[-] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Yea, very different, but good.

[-] voxthefox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago

I missed the community name and initially thought this was about bmc remedy and was about to be appalled.

Good on Remedy though, the original control is one of the best games ive played in the last decade, it got me thinking how to use that storyline to make a ttrpg campaign

[-] TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Control is one of my most favourite games of all time but just haven't been able to muster up any interest in this one. I think it's because they picked the weakest character of the entire game to be the new protagonist and that really killed my curiosity.

and also the fact it's $80CAD. It can wait.

[-] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 days ago

Honestly, it's as good as the original, trades some of the horror elements for cinematic fighter.

But the world is still weird, the patterning effect amazing, and story comes through.

[-] Yggnar@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Some of the best character arcs often require an especially pathetic/weak starting point.

[-] baropithecus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It's currently 20% off on steam. My personal GOTY for sure.

[-] theComposer@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago

I felt similarly about the new main character, and the start of the game wasn't great in that regard, but his arc gets better as the game progresses. By the end I really liked him as his own character and as a part of the larger narrative.

[-] lobut@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

I really liked the previous main character ... so I wasn't as excited with it, but the reviews have been stellar so I wanna pick it up. $80 CAD is what's putting me off of it too...

[-] TeMPotato@beehaw.org 1 points 1 day ago

The price is a very fair point.

I will say I was skeptical as well with Dylan as the MC but this game is very specifically an intimate experience with them building up Dylan as a character and someone to care about coming out from the first Control. I think it would be worth a try once it goes on sale to a price you are comfy with.
