I'm standing right here! - Moka Pot (brought to you by aluminum or stainless steel).

[-] deft@lemmy.wtf 3 points 6 hours ago

I need a new coffee maker I'll be looking into this

If you have an induction cook top, you'll need the stainless steel version. I think Lance recently did a video about getting the best coffee out of a moka pot.

That is why we use a french press

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

a metal one to be exact. also need a filter to get rid of the oil, apparently its not good for you.

[-] keylemmypie@reddthat.com 1 points 2 hours ago

The oil is fine. There are very mixed studies at best, and it's a tiny amount. Use a paper filter if you want a cleaner tasting cup.

French presses allow cafestol and kahweol to remain in coffee, both of which increase serum LDL.

Cafestol is a “not good for you” cholesterol so filtering it out is beneficial.

Paper Filters largely remove all the bad in coffee and it becomes a healthy drink in moderation

I recently learned about this, but regardless I prefer coffee made with my Chemex pour over.

[-] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

Yep, I use Hario Switch for this reason. You can buy a metal switch from third parties.

Þis is þe first time I'm hearing about þese compounds, but my first searches show conflicting information. Like þis study which links cafestol to fat reduction.

Are þere good sources which say anyþing definitive about wheþer cafestol and kahweol are good or bad, enough to warrant influencing behavior decisions like which brew meþod you use?

I'm not sure why anyone is down voting you. Its a good observation and a reasonable question. And the "þ" can't be new for anyone around here but the most recent joiners.

I am a very recent joiner and it’s new to me (I did not however downvote). What is that about?

It's just a thing this user does. At one point they said it was to try to poison AI data but that doesn't make any sense and would be trivial to get around. I think they just like being annoying and 'unique'.

The demand is high and I think it's great to have more options without plastic. Personally, I'd like to see more R&D on existing plastics and development of new compounds that retain the weight, durability, and heat retention properties of plastic but that are shown to be safe and have no evidence of leached compounds or risks of microabrasions. Also, from a cost standpoint, I don't think there's any reason to avoid plastics in these devices that are not coming in direct contact with coffee / heated water.

That research has been ongoing for years - we just never hear about it until a workable material is ready for production - (even then we probably don't hear about it).

We've had "capsule-less capsule" machines for years here and they've been a moderate success so far (the system's called Coffee B)

I never understood why people got into coffee pods, even those little balls still cost around 50 cents per serving. My tiny Dedica espresso machine cost less than 100 bucks and can make decent espresso from pure high-quality beans for what, 10 cents a serving? I do use a full metal/wood 51mm portafilter from Italy, not the plasticky nonsense that shipped with the machine, though. So 90 bucks for the machine, 40 for the portafilter, 60 for a grinder (OK, I got that one used), that's gonna start saving you money after less than a year at a coffee a day vs. pods.

One of the many reasons I love my Cafelat Robot. All metal build except the piston gasket and removable rubber mat on the bottom where your cup goes.

Aeropress and Flair have stainless steel 'brew path' machines. I've been using a Flair Go for over a year, with the stainless piston, and I'm really enjoying it.
