Do you cheat in games? (piefed.blahaj.zone)

Growing up when I was gaming in the 90s and on, I knew of the stigma of cheating in video games. You were seen as stupid, someone incapable of completing challenges on your own. You were seen as lowly, someone who can never go through life without cheating. Like, it was a pretty big deal as I grew up, hearing all of this for years on end.

I've been able to beat games without cheating, of course. But during my late teens and early adulthood, I just tried going past the stigma. Cheating in video games don't necessarily reflect how you handle life and don't translate. I've found it quite fun to cheat in video games. Probably not in multiplayer and especially on the receiving end.

I even use cheats just to beat games anymore, who the hell cares. People only care if you want to make a big deal about it, by showing it to everyone and boast how you've beaten a game in record times. I've tried beating some games head on without cheats but there just comes a point where you ask yourself if it is fun dying a hundred times at some part of a game. I don't think so, personally.

So yeah, I don't have the stigma anymore. I kinda like how gamers today only care about cheating if it was done in multiplayer or if you're trying to beat a speedrunning record or some score record. Fun is meant to be how you find it.

I still remember that game shark code years later. I still remember which digits to change to screw with the game in fun ways. I learned hexidecimal because of cheating.

In online games cheating is a dick move but in single player it’s just another way to enjoy the game.

[-] silentjohn@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 hours ago

Single player games, it's to be expected. Some games even build it in. Multiplayer, you have a special circle of hell just for you.

[-] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 hour ago

I've recently played a bunch of Valheim and Enshrouded, and modded both a bit.

The mods I'm seeing in these games are overwhelmingly cheat mods. Not like aimbot in counter strike, but like... Many different flavors of trying to get to creative mode without being in creative mode. It's all just cheating. And most of it is AI slop. SOOOO much AI slop.

[-] Henryterd@feddit.online 7 points 3 hours ago

I grew up typing IDDQD and never once felt bad about it. Single player is your sandbox. Online is the only place cheating actually costs someone else their fun.

[-] Lightsong@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Mostly with Sega genesis, n64, etc when I was kid. It was fun. And one and only time I used in multiplayer was Diablo 2 in hardcore when I was a teen, I used those tppk program for a bit, just messing around and pk'd a couple of players. And I haven't since then.

I don't see point in cheating in PvP games, I want to develop a skill. But nowadays I avoid most multiplayer PvP games anyway because of cheaters. I enjoy solo, pve and group play more than PvP.

Single player = absolutely

Multiplayer = absolutely not (unless we all unanimously agree to cheat, confirmation is required)

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

I can't wait until my group finishes the actual content of Valheim so we can turn on cheats and build giant castles

[-] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Valheim rules. I just want to farm all day, I don't need enemies.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

cheat in local games only because I only have an hour or so of game time and I just want to have an enjoyable experience and not a challenge.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

Singleplayer? Who cares. Cheat mods can be fun. You’re not messing anyone else’s day up, and as long as you’re not making any claims about your skill based on cheating it’s not even worth discussing.

Competitive multiplayer cheaters can get fucked, though.

[-] DerEnder@lemmus.org 6 points 5 hours ago

Yes. Mostly Money and Inventory Space. I'm already grinding and at full capacity in real life. Why should it follow me into my hobby space? Health, mana, legendary weapons/armor, levels/experience points, one hit kill... Almost never. Only if the game starts to become unfair. But I still like to have a challenge.

[-] ajikeshi@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

singleplayer doesnt matter in any way.

for multiplayer, if you can buy a ressource/item/perk for real money ingame, i am totally fine with it being cheated in as well

[-] Snowman_sir@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Generally no, multiplayer hate it with a passion(you suck if you do), single player only if dying to bugs and it's clearly a bug. Like being launched of a motorcycle through 3 concrete buildings onto landmines in 7 Days to Die. (thanks game/s)

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 1 points 4 hours ago

I cheat when the game pisses me off. Stuff like turning off carry weight limits because I don't enjoy the inventory management. Maybe infinite lockpicks because we all save scum that shit anyway. Sometimes I'll turn off fall damage because it's faster to fall than tediously climb down 8 ladders. Quick save mods in any game that restricts saving in any way; fuck that noise (looking at you: kingdom come deliverence). If I really get hard stuck on a difficult section for more than 1 day I'll just Google the answer or Godmode through it just to keep the game going.

Just little stuff. The equivalent of if you're reading a book, skipping the parts that don't interest you

[-] AgentOrangesicle@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Does the game cheat me?

Working on an SL1 run of Elden Ring, but I won't cheese a fight unless it's unrewarding. FromSoft usually gives you enough to make due in any situation. I'll absolutely cheese something if I'm frustrated and only invested in the game for the plot.

[-] lumpyluggage@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

I don't. I noticed that when I do I completely lose interest in playing. And I really enjoy starting a game over to do things better the second (or third) time around

[-] DioramaOfShit@lemmy.world 0 points 3 hours ago

Skill issue

[-] VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 9 hours ago

Singleplayer? Sometimes. If you have game mechanics that annoy me too much, I'll find a way to skip them.

[-] Underwaterbob@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

Almost never. The one exception I can think of is Environmental Station Alpha. I was expecting moderate difficulty and got wildly inconsistent, boringly easy sometimes, brutally insane at others instead. 'Cheating' was just a matter of changing a number in a text file that gave me like 4X the usual amount of health. Great game despite the inconsistent difficulty.

If guides are considered cheating, then yeah, sometimes I'll look something up if it's taking me forever to figure it out.

Fun fact, I had a hard time beating La Mulana with a guide. What an insane game.

[-] ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 10 hours ago
  • Multiplayer (if I play it); No. Never.
  • Single player; Yes. Trainers, mods and the like.

Having a full time job and only being able to game a few hours in the weekend. So I just want to enjoy and not being stuck and raging about one or two hard bosses. Unfortunately, I’m not a teenager anymore that can spend hours on a boss to beat.

Gaming is meant to be enjoyable and entertaining.

[-] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

I only cheat by looking up on guides, because now as an adult, I don't have the time anymore to figure things out. Some games are badly designed so as not to allow you

I kinda like how gamers today only care about cheating if it was done in multiplayer

Well yeah, it ruins the fun for everyone. I even call out the cheating of my own teammates because it makes things too easy for me as an experienced player. But on occasions in which I want a quick win, I overlook the cheating in multiplayer games.

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

I do a lil' savescumming from time to.time, but no cheating unless I'm trying to explore a feature without risk, to understand the game better.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

I actually learned programming to cheat in games. Back then (45 years ago), you got software by typing in a BASIC program from a magazine. Pages after pages of "gibberish" that somehow made something move on the screen. And somewhere in there was the counter that gave you three lives in the game. Challenge accepted!

[-] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 5 points 12 hours ago

I used to gameshark on GB/GBA/DS, and that was fun to learn how poking bits changed how the game worked, but eventually I noticed that as soon as I started manipulating the game to my own interests, I lost interest. It became arbitrary, the game disappeared into a pointless matrix of numbers.

So now I mostly only play according to how the dev intended. Like watching a movie, I'm not going to change the dialogue, or who survives at the end, just because I'm experiencing negative emotions. Those emotions are intentional as part of the art. I want the experience the art intended to create, even if it's frustrating, or devastating, or hopeless, and to an extent, even if it's tedious and boring. The lows are there so the highs feel that much higher.

[-] Dalvoron@lemmy.zip 2 points 10 hours ago

On my first playthrough of a game, I almost never cheat. Get the intended experience etc.

If I play it again, I almost always look for mods, maps and cheats to add or remove features and allow me to set my own difficulty. Often I want to do a hard mode but without one or two particularly tedious features.

Sometimes I will make a game super easy because I like its core loop but I am not in the mood for a challenge. Or if there's a achievement that will take ages to get and I am sure I could do it in time but am not willing to expend the effort.

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

Usually no, I like taking the challange as intended by the devs especially if it's hard. However, if it reaches a point where I would cheat to skip something tedious I've already stopped.

[-] Sabakodgo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

Not sure if its cheating but, using turbo mode on a controller.

[-] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 hours ago

Considering it's very rare I am playing online outside of with friends, yes on occasion. With friends, I obviously don't cheat because duh, but even for the one MMO I play, I don't wanna risk being banned on a fan server for an MMO literally designed for kids. So, not for games against other players, though, unless everyone has the same advantages or an agreement is made.

As for singleplayer games, I see no harm, so at various points I might do it. Kinda game dependent, though. If speedup is considered cheating, then yes I cheat at Mindustry using a game speedup mod. Same with the mod that allows me to take control of and explode my units at will, which I barely use. Only ever need it to clear some units blocking my visibility when building in crampt sectors after capturing them, though.

Though, I heavily use cheats ( debug mode ) in the Pokemon Rejuvenation fangame jist because of how long and difficult it is on classic mode vs story mode ( normal vs easy difficulty ). Debug mode just speads so much stuff up it's not funny. No need for me to worry about grinding EVs or wasting time if I have to run and grind exp candies to train another mon in my box.

Similar things can be said about other longer fangames that fall into the Reborn/Rejuv type very long and very story driven fangame category as well. I really like debug mode for those games because it just makes slogging through certain parts easier and less annoying in terms of not having to backtrack through an area to heal up.

Yeah, otherwise, I normally don't cheat too much, but am not against it. Especially considering I really don't care whether you cheat or not in a singleplayer game as long as you ain't deceiving others about your usage/achievements using them.

I wrote a crappy Skyrim fanfic about a character with a unique power she called Solace Controls. Then I played her. I used a lot of console commands (aka cheats).

[-] HollowNaught@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I used to cheat in two ways

The first way is in minecesft skywars on hypixel. I was 12 at the time, had 300 ping, and just wanted a win. Regret it now.

The second way was in single player games. I'd hack in items mainly just to avoid grinds. I'm okay with myself still doing this if I apply stringent rules I must follow (such as only hacking in rare candies in a nuzlocke with a level cap), but you have to remember that you're your own worst enemy in this regard. It's so easy to start overreaching and take away the "game" part of the videogame. I remember hacking in a bunch of free money in btd5 when I first played it, and I heavily regret it because it robbed me of experiencing the game.

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 12 hours ago

Yes in single player games if something starts to bore/bother me. I don't play games for the challenge.

[-] spiffmeister@aussie.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

If something is boring why not just stop playing?

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 35 minutes ago

that's what they're doing. they're not playing (skipping) the boring parts

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago

Usually just taking the grind out of things.

[-] slazer2au@lemmy.world 95 points 1 day ago

In single player yes, because I play how I want to play.
In MP with friends, no I don't.

That’s wild, definitely did not experience that stigma growing up in the 90s. Cheats were just something fun to play around with, like the skins or big head mode that we used to unlock. Of course cheating in multiplayer, especially PvP has and should be considered taboo unless all parties are in agreement, but cheats in single player like a GTA or the Sims are just for fun.

[-] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 hours ago

Yeah there were a huge amount of cheat codes and a whole culture around finding and abusing glitches and stuff back in the day. Not sure what OP experienced but it's not what I remember. If anything I think people are more intense now about 'playing the game as intended'. Which, personally, I get. I, myself, want to play through the whole game at least once without cheating. But if it's just to screw around and not to skip something, or if it's a part I've gotten through before but I just want to skip ahead, then yeah I'll fuck around with some cheats.

I don’t understand people who hate on people that cheat in singleplayer games. You are the only person affected by that and if it makes it more fun for you then why not?

You rocked Contra without the Konami code?

Playthrough or it didn't happen.

Dude, the 90's was mostly couch co-op. I don't believe this post.

Even on my third play through of Fallout 1, my friends knew I was cheating, but I was doing so as I wanted to know every quest.

PVP cheating is shit, but there was barely PVP in the 90's.

Sorry, but as a 90's kid, nobody was talking any shit unless they were being a braggart about beating something like Contra or Gradius III using the Konami code.

And being cheap in Street Fighter II only led to combo systems that you see in every fighting game today.

So what examples are you actually giving with "cheating" in the 90's?
