I know a lot of people hate them, it's fashionable to hate them in the same way as It's fashionable to say "oh I can't do Maths" (nothing against my brothers-in-neurodiversity)

I bloody love a spreadsheet. I've worked on some crackers over the years. They're more art than science.. The presentation.. The innovation.. Learning a new function is like learning a new technique... They're never finished or perfect, you just have to stop making them one day and share them with the world.

I will die on this hill. Spreadsheets are art.

Edit : is this supposed to be an unpopular opinion generally or amongst the nerds of Lemmy? 😁

I took an Excel class once upon a time and it's insane what you can do with that program. And I just scratched the surface. And that was probably 25 years ago.

I'm an IT person now and I actually know less about Excel than I used to. There's people where I work that don't know shit about computers but are wizards in Excel. It's impressive.

In my time in tech I’ve seen entire companies built on excel and VB. I hate spreadsheets and they are horrible. They also are amazing.

If done correctly, I agree they can be an art form. Especially with the right font as well.

I personally have a specific font I have for a personal spreadsheet that I consider a personal work of art. Everything is neatly organized in such a way that it makes gking through it super easy, IMO, and is aesthetically pleasing to my tastes also.

Although, what I do for that spreadsheet is somewhat basic compared to what others do, so I cannot say much with authority. Either way, I actually really like well and intentionally designed spreadsheets.

I might be living in a bubble but this is not an unpopular opinion in my circles.

Me and one of my parents are spreadsheet geeks, and while our loved ones don’t partake in the creation themselves they don’t hate them either.

Spreadsheets are great ... until your company is trying to use a spreadsheet to do a database's job. Then they suck.

You guys ever watch those excel tournaments they have in Vegas?

[-] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

Everyone I know loves a freak in the sheets.

Folk who shit on spreadsheets because they think its still funny aren't welcome in my house. What? You got a gay joke next? Still call women "bitch" and people "retarded"? Grow up.

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago

You're right, PP_BOY_. They need to grow up.

Spreadsheets are great when used correctly. In at least 80% of usage they are not the right choice and infuriating. If you need a database, just use a database. If you want to make a list of 10 things, you don't need a spreadsheet either. If you're making a fill-out-form, digital or to print, a spreadsheet with cells arranged to be text or fields is also just the wrong choice.

That seems to be a popular opinion in any office I've ever worked in or with.

Reject spreadsheets embrace duckdb

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 1 points 16 hours ago

Yeah not sure this is unpopular. A lot of the people I see dissing spreadsheets are more pointing out how they're abused and many of them really should be databases. I often do that but I'll reach for a spreadsheet when appropriate.

[-] DataCrime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 15 hours ago

But you can abuse the to do other stuff. Generate SQL queries, merge emal records, generate graphics, create mazes...

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
