I am still having trouble deciding who really was the better magician. Perhaps the Nolan brothers are the answer.

The Prestige is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

[–] flipthetube@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

Concur. I had to watch it for a college course years ago and was absolutely blown away. One of my all time favorites.

Christian Bale is just so fucking good in this movie.

[–] livus@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

Yeah he really is. I hadn't realised what a good actor he is until I saw this.

[–] counselwolf@lemmy.fmhy.ml 25 points 2 years ago

Tesla was the best magician all along.

[–] wile_e8@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Now go back and watch it again just to see how many details and clues your missed the first time.

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.one 2 points 2 years ago

I've watched it a handful of times and catch something new every time.

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 years ago

Were you watching closely?

[–] deanza7@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s a stunning movie. Now you can go on and watch The illusionist :) It’s at the same level of mystery and atmosphere is fantastic.

[–] Krakatoacoo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I'll have to check it out!

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 years ago

Yea when this came out, not too many saw it. But it was awesome to be at a party or something and find someone else who had seen because you were almost certainly going to vibe out with each other over how awesome it was and what you thought about it and recounting which scenes happened when and how the film links them all together.

Apart from all the magician stuff and the core plot, I think an easy to miss aspect of the film is just how much it seems Chris/Jonathan had learnt from Memento and were keen to deploy in an even better more cohesive and dramatic way. I still think it's astounding the way the various threads of the film are not only told to the audience but told with respect to what the characters are learning at the same time.

Which of course strongly links with, what I think the film is in many ways about, namely the connection between magic and film making or story telling. How many "prestiges" are in "The Prestige" ... were we watching closely?

This and the illusionist are both great movies. I immediately think of Red Lights after those 2.

[–] samwise@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'll have to add that to my watch list. I hadn't heard of the illusionist until now thanks!

[–] livus@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They came out at around the same time I think.

[–] Starb3an@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They did. It's kinda like A Bug Life and Antz

[–] livus@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Or Dante's Peak and Volcano. I think this phenomenon is called twin films.

[–] Dave_r@reddthat.com 7 points 2 years ago

What a fucking awesome movie.

[–] dwks@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Sadly for me, it’s a one time watch movie cause I already know the plot. Wish my brain got reset function 😂

[–] evranch@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I'm not a big movie rewatcher myself, but this is one of those movies to watch again because you know the plot. It's extremely well crafted, and there are plenty of significant scenes with hidden meaning or foreshadowing to catch on the second watch if you keep your eyes open.

[–] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago

Absolutely. Trying to catch all the different ways the movie tells you everything before anything is revealed is fun.

My favorite is the little kid that cries because he killed the birds brother.

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.one 3 points 2 years ago

This and The Sixth Sense are among the few movies that are better on rewatch because you know the twist but the characters don't.

[–] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 years ago

It really rewards rewatching IMO. You can appreciate the huge amounts of foreshadowing. The movie tells you exactly what's going on right from the beginning. But you're not really looking, because you want to be fooled.

[–] Ab_intra@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

It's amazing, like every other Chris Nolan movie. His movies are so captivating that you just get drawn into the pictures.

[–] Solo@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

My favorite Nolan movie.

[–] ClaretNBlue@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I've not seen this film for agea! Will watch again over the weekend. What a film!

[–] moobythegoldensock@geddit.social 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

who really was the better magician

John Cutter. Angier and Borden have good gimmicks, but they don’t understand magic in the way Cutter does.

[–] Krakatoacoo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I didn't think about Cutter. That's a good answer.

[–] R05@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Loved it when it was released, so many layers

[–] fuzzybee@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

One of my top 5 favorite movies. I'm due for a rewatch.

[–] sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf 2 points 2 years ago

Great great film!

[–] xoniq@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 years ago

They could have called the movie “twister” with so many twists 😂

Jokes aside, a solid Nolan movie. Giving magicians a dark edge.

[–] carloshr@feddit.cl 2 points 2 years ago

Really great movie! I need to watch it again.

[–] kresten@feddit.dk 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I'll have to watch this🤔

[–] pazukaza@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

If you haven't, it is pretty good. Somewhere between 8 and 9/10.

[–] Krakatoacoo@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Definitely!

[–] ghashul@feddit.dk 2 points 2 years ago

I just recently saw this again, and it's still great!

[–] LTFRANTZ@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

My favorite movie. Are you watching closely?
