So lets say hypothetically you had to watch a movie right now. Obviously you're gonna pick something you've seen before, and is pretty entertaining. What would you pick? Or maybe a movie thats better with friends? Idk just give me good movies

Something like Airplane or Clue is always going to be a feel good time.

Kung fu Hustle, great soundtrack, great fight choreography, great comedy. One of my all time favourites.

[–] ADHDefy@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago (2 children)

If you're into this, Shaolin Soccer is amazing, too!

[–] Lowbird@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

It really is! Such a surprise, that movie was.

[–] axibzllmbo@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check it out

Kill Bill (2003)

Amélie (2001)

Fargo (1996)

[–] Lowbird@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

If you like Amelie, try Pushing Daises (tv - sadly it falls apart in later seasons and iirc was cancelled, but nonetheless) and The Brothers Bloom (movie 2008)!

[–] pushka@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

Ah, yes I've heard really good things about pushing Daisies,, def need to check them out ✨

[–] mananevergone@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Kill Bill is always controversial when I say it's one of my favorite movies but it's just sooo good!!! I can get why it's not for everyone though

[–] pushka@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

Yes - definitely 💕 I love how colourful and theatrical it is, amazing music, mix of being wacky and silly but with full series dead-pan delivery~

In 2002 I bought a PS2 which came with the Charlie's Angels DVD, and I watched it a thousand times, I feel like it has a similar vibe hehehe

Hot fuzz, Airplane, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, Zombieland, How to train your dragon.

There's more but those are the top ones.

Edit: how did I forget Eurotrip

[–] Klaymore@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah I watched How To Train Your Dragon in 3D in VR and it was great, 10/10 movie. The soundtrack is really good too, I've been listening to it quite a bit.

  • Hellzapoppin (1941)
  • It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
  • A Shot in the Dark (1964)
  • The Three Musketeers (1973)
  • Flash Gordon (1980)
  • Ghostbusters (1984)
  • Repo Man (1984)
  • Kick-Ass (2010)
[–] HalJor@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Upvote just for Hellzapoppin. The rest is >chef's kiss<.

[–] hiperviper@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My top three for this would be:

  • Scott Pilgrim vs The World
  • Snatch
  • Shawn of the Dead

I see Starship Troopers mentioned in the comments too, that's a good one. I think I'd also shout out Super Troopers as well. Weird that all these movies start with "S". I guess I like movies that start with S!

[–] bonzo22@lemmy.one 3 points 2 years ago

Came here to say Scott pilgrim, could watch that movie on repeat it's so good!

The Karl Urban version of Dredd

Road House

Tropic Thunder

[–] StrahdVonZarovich@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

I LOVE Dredd!! Saw some clips of it on youtube which made me curious. I was blown away by the film, and I immediately showed it to all my friends. Great film. Ill try watching Road House, I remember seeing bits of it on tv years ago

[–] CaptainCimmeria@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Conan the Barbarian or Big Trouble in Little China.

[–] StrahdVonZarovich@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Conan the Barbarian is one of my favorite movies ever. Ive watched it at least 7 times. No other fantasy film ive seen has managed to have the vibe of it.

O Brother Where Art Thou

[–] fl1ghtless@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Starship Troopers!. Would you like to know more?

[–] Lowbird@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Even better if you read the book first and completely hate it.

Maybe not worth that though.

[–] setsneedtofeed@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It’s easy it be able to enjoy the book and movie as what they each aspire to be and treat them separately.

We’ll never get a movie rendition of the book (which is more than just putting power armor in it), but that’s alright.

If you like the book, I consider it part of the power armor trifecta along with Forever War, and Armor.

For general military scifi I recommend Tactics Of Mistake which is basically the applied Art Of War but in space. There is also Old Man’s War and if you just want power armor schlock, the original series of Halo books are better than they have any right to be.

  • Soapdish
  • Monty Python's Life of Brian
  • 9 to 5
  • What We Do in the Shadows
[–] SevenSwell@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

I will turn on The Count of Monte Cristo at the slightest provocation. It's just so watchable!

Pacific Rim

[–] Dathknight@feddit.de 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)
  • Beverley Hills Cop
  • Die Hard
  • Lethal Weapon
  • any Star Wars Movie (yes any)
  • Life of Brain
  • Starship Troopers
[–] sifigi2001@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Great list, I'd add Demolition Man. 90's action cheese at its finest.

[–] Dathknight@feddit.de 6 points 2 years ago

I would not mind Demolition Man on that list. Now that you are mentioned that movie, there is a distinct lack of Arnold Schwarzenegger on my list! So:

  • Total Recall
  • True Lies
  • Last Action Hero
[–] Strawberry@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Con air is an amazingly funny movie to watch with friends. You also get to marvel at the ridiculously star studded cast for such a stupid movie.

And anything where Nicolas cage chews scenary with a stupid accent is an instant classic.

[–] StrahdVonZarovich@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Watched that with a bunch of friends one time. What a nuts but entertaining film. Bless John Malkovich for trying so hard in that movie lol

[–] Strawberry@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

He really does go much harder

[–] mananevergone@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Clerks for me.

[–] Lowbird@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Gather friends. Watch Birdemic. Profit. :)

Edit: the company is essential for it.

[–] Girlontheinterweb@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Ooh, the choice is tough. Am I happy, sad, drunk? Maybe Jaws, possibly Young Frankenstein, is it a Casino day? Probably it’ll be Aliens

[–] caio@lemmy.fdvrs.xyz 3 points 2 years ago

It was starting to get pretty long so I chose 5 :)

  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail
  • The Incredibles
  • Fracture
  • Red
  • Moneyball

Trying to think back to when I worked in a video store and what me and my mate would chill out to.

Hercules Returns Mystery Science Theater 3000 - The Movie

[–] overkill0485@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

Tropic Thunder, Borat, Kung Pow

[–] neamhsplach@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

I am absolutely head over heels for The Apartment directed by Billy Wilder. It's dated but it's still very funny and touching.

[–] setsneedtofeed@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

The Long Kiss Goodnight.

It’s a great movie, and fantastic to introduce to people. How in the world this movie is not more well known is beyond me.

Geena Davis plays Lady Jason Bourne. Samuel L. Jackson is her sidekick, and all the dialog is written by Shane Black (the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon, Nice Guys, and touched up Predator’s dialog).

Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... The Princess Bride
