Participation is really easy, just take a picture of what you cooked today and post it, no recipes needed.

This is a public forum for a discord server of friends who are all vegans and cook at home for their families.

We are here to share some inspiration, to see what others are doing and to stay engaged in something that is both our hobby and a required task.

This forum is not a "food porn" community, a recipe book or a place to teach you how to cook. It is a place for people who already cook to meet other people like themselves and provide on topic support and conversation as much as long distance friends on the internet can do. We are doing show and tell about what we made and we don't care about its instagram worthiness.

Veganism isn’t a diet but I have to eat every day. This is for the vegan home cooks. Anything non vegan will be deleted.

Rules

1. Be Vegan.

If it is not vegan it doesn’t belong here… or anywhere.

2. Post home cooking.

No restaurant or fast food. This is what every other vegan space is about and we don’t want to promote any large or small business tyrants.

3. Join the Discord

We’re an active community of vegan home cooks that like to talk about what we are cooking today.

4. Do not make any rude comments or digs at anyone’s food, cooking style, specific diet, restrictions or technique.

While we are all cooks, we all have different requirements and we’re not asking for help, we are doing show and tell.

5. Do not use trademarked brands

Use generic names. We’re cooking with tvp not whatever business brands it and we’re not trying to turn comrades into billboards. No plant-based vegan-pandering capitalist crap like Impossible, Beyond, Dairy-company owned “vegan” cheese.

6. Do not ask for a recipe without otherwise engaging the OP (No posts that are just “recipe?”)

We are not food bloggers. Sometimes we're excited to share and will tell you the recipes we used but this isn't required. Instead try doing your own research and tell us what you learned and we can talk about it.

7. Careful with making unasked for suggestions.

Sometimes we like to hear suggestions but you should be nice about it and know the person you are making suggestions to. We are in the discord and you can get to know us that way. If you are just a visitor from the fediverse, this isn’t the place for you to start telling other people what to do.

8. Adults Only.

While this isn't a community for adult material we expect everyone who participates to be an adult. If you have a gross and profane username you will be removed.

A rich tvp filling with garlic mash, and i made a mushroom gravy to go with it. There's about a block and a half of vegan butter across the filling, mash, and gravy, so definitely not the healthiest of recipes. Delicious though.

that looks incredible. ive been wanting to try making some recently

[–] Doublepluskirk@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Thanks. It's a dish that you can make as simple or as complicated as you like, so definitely one to try

Looks great! And it wouldn't be very difficult to make it 'healthy' for those who would like. Just sub the butter out for olive oil and use something like lentils and chickpeas for filling, still tastes delicious.

Oh absolutely. I was willfully making this quite decadent as it was to share and I wanted to impress. My favourite 'mince' substitute is actually a mix of brown lentils, walnuts, and mushrooms

Definitely, I love making decadent food myself as well. Just showing an alternative option is also possible for people browsing :)

Idk if this is the right place to ask, but I'm trying to limit my meat intake a bit more. Does anyone know of a good non mushroom vegan or vegetarian gravy? I just cannot stand mushrooms and it's the only gravy I've been able to find with my (admittedly limited) research

I made one once with veggie stock, soy sauce, and nutritional yeast, but thickened it with potatoes, cause I'm a fatass

Onion gravy is pretty easy

[–] nezbyte@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Hope this helps.

ChatGPT: You can make a vegan gravy without mushrooms by using vegetable broth or stock as a base and adding flavor with ingredients like onions, garlic, soy sauce, nutritional yeast, and herbs like thyme or rosemary. Cornstarch or flour can be used as a thickening agent.

Soy sauce and tofu are your friends for umami taste

You could make an onion gravy with veggie stock and really caramelized onions. I'd add miso or nutritional yeast to add some savory flavour in with the sweet onions.

Or try this chickpea gravy recipe from ppk as a starting point. I've been making and tweaking it for years (see the comments about the lemon juice and texture). It's not like a smooth meat sauce gravy, but it is really tasty on potatoes.

Same. It's a favourite from when I was a kid and it's so easy to veganise

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Oo, that looks tasty.

What's "tvp" stand for? I haven't hung around in English-speaking vegan spaces all that much so I'm not down with the lingo

[–] TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Textured vegetable(soybean) protein. Basically dried soy protein crumbles you rehydrate with a stock or whatever.

[–] hydroptic@sopuli.xyz 5 points 7 months ago

Ahh right, that makes sense. I'm very familiar with the stuff but didn't know what it's called in English. Thanks!

This is the answer I am leaning towards
