Got frustrated trying to sign up for Lemmy.
Lemmy
Everything about Lemmy; bugs, gripes, praises, and advocacy.
For discussion about the lemmy.ml instance, go to !meta@lemmy.ml.
This was a thing in the beginning, a lot of instances had just spinning buttons on signup if email didn't work correctly.
Between Lemmy and Reddit, I’m a long time lurker, rarely a poster, especially as toxic as Reddit was I just found what I was looking for and moved along. Don’t mind me, I’m just:
PassingThrough.
My old username from reddit and HN was already taken and I couldn't think of anything else I wanted to be called so I just picked some random characters like this:
>>> import random >>> ''.join([random.choice("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789") for x in range(5)]) 'e0qdk'
I have that literally in my kbin profile, but it's not on my reddthat one. (I think I tried to copy it there originally when I set up the account but ran into some issue with Lemmy's UI -- been long enough that I forget what exactly.)
I signed up during the Rexodus, which happened to be a lovely summer day so I was hanging out outside at the time of sign-up. I glanced around my yard looking for inspiration, saw my fireweed patch, and figured that was as good a name as any.
Fireweed is a hardy plant native to much of North America, with beautiful pink flowers that native bees love, and it requires little maintenance once established. It is also edible and has medicinal properties! Please consider planting it (or seed-bombing it in an empty lot) if you live in its native range! More info here
Definitely was not the fire weed I was thinking. That said, you’ve inspired me to try to grow some of my own!
I'm a lad from Bradford, in the UK.
And it kinda rhymes.
It's what Lemmings say at the start of every level https://youtu.be/AuiyFXMjGxA?t=113
I played with someone online I on the PS vita and started using their username. Sorry secret300
It's my surname "translated" to japanese: "Del Castillo" --> "和地城乃"
It roughly translates to "From the peaceful land/dirt castle". I also chose those kanji for the phonetics. "Dehl kasteejo" -> "Kazuchijō No"
Castillo : Castle 城 (jō) : Castle
It's from The Labyrinth
I sinned. As always.
Actually it came from a pretty dark place lol. I’d made an attempt on my life a couple of months prior, and felt completely hopeless and lost, unable to find the strength to do pretty much anything.
So I made it ironically, and it ended up sticking.
I'm glad you're still here
Main thing is Capt, you're here to tell us your best stories.
Tell us your most favourite food please, and how you came across it? Mine's carbonara and an Italian girlfriend who loved that shit.
Maybe I was born with it.
It somewhat sounds like 'Ace of Spades'. I am a bit old school. If I hear the name Lemmy, I am reminded of Motorhead.
It's an old story.
I used to be heavy into martial arts. I'm a big guy, ex power lifter, and with a good sized belly (though the exact size has fluctuated over the years).
I was working a job where I had the freedom to set up a kind of personal dojo in the side yard while working nights. Neighbor was a smartass after seeing me work out a bit, made sumo jokes to a guy doing cutting practice. Explained the difference between sumo and what I was doing.
The guy was slow, and asked if that was like the samurai.
I said yeah, because I was doing Japanese jujutsu, iaido and general kenjutsu. You know, samurai shit.
He cracks a joke that I must be the fattest samurai in the south. Which, at the time, I was maybe 18-20% body fat, so not even close compared to a couple of guys I took classes with. I had been cutting weight pretty good for months, despite still having that bulgy belly you get when you power lift. Looked fatter than I was tbh.
Anyway, trying to keep this to the short version.
I told the story to friends, and discovered I had a new nickname, as friends do. It got shortened to southern samurai, and after I started using that as a gaming handle, it got shortened to southsamurai by character limits.
Starburst Jellybeans. My favorite.
I think p is an inherently funny letter, and while brainstorming for names including it I kinda thought this one was cute, too.
I wanted to be transparent about me coming from a cyrillic country first, and of my usual style of conversation and overall intelligence second, for быдло means 'uncultured' in many slavic languages. That adds context to my replies and let's people choose their strategy around them. I also found the combination of bid and law kinda funny in forming that word.
It's a play on the term 'bi-curious," but for dharmic faiths instead of sexuality.
Bastardized version of the name of a Sumerian god, referenced heavily in Snowcrash by Neil Stephenson.
Pirrrrrrrr = Pir^8
I'm named after the wave pattern caused by the tension of a blade, specifically a Sabre as it moves through the air.
Master, forgive me, but I have to go all out just this once 🤺
I’m just Sophia…
The first part is my first name, and I used to be in a punk band called Suspect Package.
✅ am lazy
✅ am couch potato
Felt like a great fit.
It's been my username for 10 years online and I plan on sticking with it. I do go by LCP nowadays though as it's shorter.
I don't know who Daniel is but I miss him :)
Elton John song.
It's just a shortened version of my name. Mine comes from elementary school. One of my classes had 3 Max in them as the name was really popular for my generation. So we just started using Max-X where X is the initial of the last name.
It has stuck since.
I was playing on a MUD (early mmorpg thing by telnet) in 1994 and the creator wanted some of the core players to make characters as part of the plot. The game never went anywhere after that (it was called Kaspelheim) but the character I made was Pronell Mordini, perrin (otterlike humanoids) trademaster.
I just kept using the name online since then. It's never taken. But someone else did get pronell@gmail.com.
I hate thinking of usernames and I am extremely bad at it.
Uh...
I’m a fan of the Miami Hurricanes. Their colors are orange and green.
Kinda random tbh. I used to use "gerry" but that name was quite often used because it's a Dutch name. So I needed something extra. In a bit of a goofy mood I came across some appelflappen, Dutch food comprised of apple sort of wrapped by pastry. And, uh, my brain did brain stuff.
I went through a series of events in 2009 and 2010 (a year and 3 months) that resulted in literally 90ish % of my life gone or ruined.... And had to recover. Ever since then ive adopted the Pheonix name with some extension. Sorta literally risen from the fire (house I lived in towards the end of my time in college burned down, the second of the 3 events).
I spell it wrong because i always liked it. More that way.
Not the most positive or fun of stories... But im here and standing still... So its something??
Firstly, Captain Beyond is the name of a band that I'm fond of - although by far not my favorite one, ever.
However, it's also somewhat aspirational. "Captain" I define as the sort of leader as in the captains of Star Trek, someone who leads by example, who makes-it-so, takes care of their people and their "ship" so-to-speak. Someone who is more of a steward than a boss. Someone who is first and foremost in command of themselves. "Beyond" refers to the aspiration to go further and achieve great things.
As I said it's more aspirational than anything - I don't think I do a very good job of living up to that moniker most of the time.
Japanese version of nier automata has one of the characters scream TWOOOBEEESAAAAANN through tears.
I love it. It is so over the top it makes me laugh thinking of it.
The English version is no where near as dramatic.
Been using for what feels like a lifetime, although I went through a few usernames during the late 90s early 00s and somewhere along the way BlueEther or a derivative just stuck, it was after a comment something like "jus putting this out into the blue ether" in a forum post
Baron is from Brian Blessed as Voltan in Flash Gordon yelling "BARINNNNNNNN" at Timothy Dalton, and not knowing it was spelled with an "i" instead.
It's been my nickname for 30+ years, so I went with it when I started out online.
