Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars is pretty hard-scifi.
Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space not so much but very entertaining.
Edit: for light reading Stross's Saturns Children is fun.

No for-profit will bother with security unless forced to, as it's seen as an expense and shareholders don't like that.

You could only really have automated trucks if the roads used were prepared for that - and even then you'd have issues with edge-cases.
