Admittedly one of the benefits of Reddit was the extensive modding community that kept on top of things like this. In some news communities they would remove duplicate stories, even from different sources, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Of course they could be overzealous too. :)

Don't messages sent by you come back in a list together with any received ones?

Oh wow, you're right! Somehow I totally missed that. Even Thunder displays sent messages.

So you're right. You could get all incoming messages from a specific user by passing creator_id but you just couldn't get all the message you sent to a specific person without getting everything and filtering them.

Thank you so much for sharing this!!

It can be encrypted...

I don't understand what this is, can you explain? Apologies if it's obvious.

I ended up just disabling that notifications channel cuz I don't care that much it it fails in the background.

Ugh. Roku was one of the platforms with fewer ads.

  • Roku will be adding more ads to the home screens of its devices and TVs in the near future.
  • The ads will be interactive and 'shoppable' and will cover a range of industries, including restaurants and cars.
  • Roku already has a significant amount of ads on its home screen, and it is unclear if users will be able to change their preferences for the new ads.

It's a shame! It was actually a good news source with a curated feed not run by Google!

• Artifact app to be shut down, citing a small market opportunity and the need to focus on newer projects.

• App's complexity and operations will be slimmed down, with the removal of the ability to add new comments and posts.

• Existing posts will remain visible, and core news reading capabilities will continue until the end of February.

• Disney retracts copyright claim on a YouTuber's "Steamboat Willie" video, allowing it to be monetizable and shareable worldwide.

• The claim had previously demonetized the video and restricted its visibility and embedding options.

• This move by Disney may signal its recognition of "Steamboat Willie" being in the public domain.

• Hey had previously faced a similar rejection from Apple for its original iOS app four years ago.

• Hey plans to fight Apple's decision, but the specific approach is not yet known.

Hey all I'm not sure if this question makes any sense but it's something I've been thinking about.

I use YouTube alternatives like FreeTube and NewPipe. But one thing I miss from YouTube is their recommendation algorithm. OK it's not great and has been getting worse, but at least there are somewhat relevant videos on the home page.

Does anyone know of anything (third-party service, self-hosted, app, etc.) that can provide YouTube recommendations based on what I like?

One thing I've been using is FreeTube's Most Popular tab. It's like Trending on YouTube but only for your Invidious instance. It usually has good recommendations, but I think that's only because my interests happen to align with those of other people who also use FreeTube. :)

Thanks for any ideas!

• Medical device maker Masimo is confident it can win its legal battle against Apple over a feature on the Apple Watch, citing previous victories against True Wearables, a startup run by a former Apple executive.

• Masimo alleges that Apple couldn't have developed certain watch technologies without the help of Marcelo Lamego, who previously worked at both Masimo and Apple.

• Masimo CEO Joe Kiani accuses Apple of a deliberate infringement of intellectual property, resulting in an import ban on certain Apple Watch models, which has been temporarily paused pending further review.

FOSS IP/ISP detector (programming.dev)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by AnActOfCreation@programming.dev to c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

Does anyone know of a good FOSS IP detector? I'm thinking of something like https://www.whatismyisp.com/ or https://whatismyipaddress.com/. Like how https://librespeed.org/ is a good alternative to https://www.speedtest.net/.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Thanks for the answers everyone! Looks like we have...

I'm mentally toying with the idea of videos

If they're anything like this post I'd watch in a heartbeat!

Yep (and I had the same reaction).

It needs to he implemented on the server first! It's in the database, but there's no API call that will return it.
