I'm more familiar with the former, and think it's very good, but it may not give you the basic introduction to object oriented programming (classes and all that) you're looking for; the latter should.

Aw man. I used to use a 2 sided "cube" with compiz, just flipped the desktop around to the back side.

- s6 with some high level sugar

Material Files at least has a search that seems to work, but it doesn't clearly show all the result paths at once.
If you can mount the filesystem to your computer, you could use broot or anything you want from there.
I don't understand what gentoo-ness you're looking for, if you want a binary and not source-based distro, and don't want a rolling distro (but do want timely packages?).
That said if you're interested in a rolling debian testing based distro, Siduction is nice.
