It's been a few decades since I've rented, and my previous landlord was very transparent with providing information about increased taxes and utilities to explain why rent was increasing. He knew that if he just increased it for the lolz, I'd happily just find another place to rent.
With the market being the way it is, the shortage has provided the leverage crooked people can use against renters.
I do wonder how many landlords are crooked, and how many are being forced to drive up rent due to the rise of excessive tax hikes, insurance premiums, utilities, maintenance and labor costs, etc. I know personally, my home's property taxes have more than tripled in the past 5 years. I'm now priced out of my neighborhood.
Except long distance power transmission losses are not minimal. Depending on many factors, losses can easily be in the 5% - 10% range. With the amount of energy going through those wires, that's HUGE. The additional complexity and inefficienies of relay stations, all add up. Having worked in the power sector for nearly a decade, I knew engineers who were celebrated in being able to squeeze an improvement of tiny fractions of % efficiency, as that resulted in millions of dollars saved throughout the year.
Depends on many factors. Solar would be useful if the area had extensive terrain that could serve the city, however, in northern latitudes winter would be challenging with short days and low angle sunlight. If the situation allows, wind power could be useful, when the wind is blowing. The fantastic thing about these units is that they'll crank out the KW day, night, no matter the season or location. They are not restricted to large generator farms with the scale of upkeep and maintenance they require. A city could be isolated in challenging remote areas and be self sustaining for their energy needs. These aren't meant to be a "fix-all" solution for every situation, but they make tremendous sense in many applications where current methods are not ideal.
One significant benefit of these would be the lack of transmission losses that plague massive plants which have to send electricity sometimes hundreds of miles. Having smaller units maintained by municipalities would be cheaper for cities far from major electrical plants.
Many suggest adding some type of adhesive to the surface, and I have a trick that might interest you. Glue sticks and hairspray are messy and are a pain to clean. When I used a glass bed, I kept about a tablespoon of sugar dissolved in little less than a cup of water nearby. One could use a paper towel to wipe a thin film over your glass bed. I did this as it warmed up and the water dried quickly, leaving a thin tacky surface. One could put it in a small spray bottle too. Very easy to clean with water. If you eventually get buildups after weeks of printing, a quick wash with soapy water cuts through instantly. Give it a try. I could never get PLA to stick to my glass bed. PETG worked sometimes, and other times it bonded too well and broke the glass when it was removed, or cooled to the point of removing. The sugar water worked there too in providing a sacrificial layer that protected the glass and made removal easier.
