Its a bad idea from a power consumption POV, your old PC will be very inefficient, and running it 24/7 as a router will rapidly add up.
Security wise, you'll be running a fairly up to date Linux or BSD based OS, so its perfectly safe.
Proof of work means that your client has to do some "work" in order to gain access. It typically means a challenge that can't be trivially solved, but can be trivially verified.
For example, the challenge may be something to the effect of:
"Give me a string, that when hashed by md5, results in a hash that ends in 1234".
Your browser can then start bruteforcing until it finds a string (should take a few seconds max), and then it can pass the string back to the server. The server can verify with a single hash, and you're in.
Its not wildly different to crypto mining, but the difficulty is much lower for antibot, as it needs to be solveable in seconds by even low end devices.

Lemmy has a huge amount of hardcore lefty's. If you can get them to not vote, and especially if you can get them to tell their friends not to vote, that is a big win.
Astroturfing/sockpuppeting is dirty cheap to do, so no reason not to try.
You do see some users here that will post continously on about a certain topic repeatedly, with no other opinions. They might be legit, but I have my suspicions.

Most people have no trouble following Christianitys rules, and if you struggle without Sky Daddy watching your every move, maybe your a bad person.
Imagine every day I ask you what the color of the sky is. There are a bunch of forum threads that tell me the sky color, there is a wiki with sky color information, and the search can give me the sky colour. I have all the information I need to work out the sky color, but I still keep asking you.
That is what these communities often deal with, it grinds you down and gives you have a short fuse.
