Search engines work by building an index over all the sites on the internet. The index and the status of the sites aren't linked, the search engine basically has a cached view of the site.
If the site goes down after it is indexed, DDG won't know about it until the next index.
Depends a lot on the material, and your location. Paper recycling, mostly legit. Metal, probably. Plastic, unlikely.
On the other hand, the U16 social media was rammed through, and looks to be expanded to include search engines, with little patience or care.

Also, is worth knowing when not to optimise. Code you can read is code you can maintain, and some optimisations are not as readable.
Learn how to use a profiler. Its a bit of an artform, but learning to interpret the results will help you find slow code sections. It'll also help you determine if your optimisations are actually worthwhile. Measure first, optimise second.
The major one that concerns me is who is behind them. Even if we trust that their encryption is not backdoored, there is a lot of information that can be gathered just from the frequency of messages and who they are between.
