The names Ireland and Éire both derive from Old Irish Ériu, which in turn comes from Proto-Celtic ɸīweriyū meaning "fertile soil". The Classical Latin name for the island of Ireland, Ivernia, also comes from this same root

Not sure why you're mentioning Ireland, did you think it was named after Kathy Ireland?

When I saw how low tongue was, I thought surely not, what about "she gave me a good tongue-lashing". I then thought about it for a microsecond more and realised the ranking's probably correct.

“Their analysts determined that frustrating the user results in more time spent on the app—and more time viewing ads—than if users are satisfied. Remember in ‘The Matrix’ when The Architect tells Neo that the first virtual world the robots created was a utopia, but the people rejected it? It works sort of like that.”

Brilliant.

I didn't realise that Cheryl was her first name, I thought they'd made a mistake (like how they've spelt it Ryker).

But Wikipedia informs me that her full name is Cheryl Gates McFadden and she uses both names:

She is usually credited as Cheryl McFadden when working as a choreographer and Gates McFadden when working as an actress

Are you informed about what they're using AI for? One example is in-browser translations, which allows it to work offline and be privacy-respecting (no calls to Google, etc).

So, they're just going to add a QR code? Of course, you could already do that, but having it built in and be the default process would probably help.

The widow of Alexei Navalny, Yulia Navalnaya, has had her X account restored after it was briefly suspended for unknown reasons.

This seems a misleading headline, unless what I've quoted was edited in. I'm no fan of Musk, but it could be something like a load of people (or bots) reported the account and an automated system put it into review.

You're assuming bad faith instead of remembering Hanlon's razor. programming.dev's technical admin is not your enemy.
