I've noticed that people forgot how long ago the Reddit blackout was (about 19 months ago?), and Lemmy has improved a lot since then. Back then Lemmy was like pre-alpha, super buggy, and servers were very unstable. And we have way more 3rd party apps/frontends now.

HUGE WR! Suigi was previously in 6th place with a 1:37:00 from 4 days ago, and now beat Weegee's 1:36:02 by a large margin with the first ever 1:35! Suigi skipped 1:36 entirely lol. Insert meme of "I never saw a 1:36, and I never fucking will!"

He currently holds 4 out of the 5 major WRs, and would need to retake the 70 star record to hold all 5 of them.

The world first sub 20 minute time in the Super Mario 64 - 16 Star category blindfolded speedrun has finally been achieved. After 10 Months of restless grinding, 118 days / streams of practice, runs, and more, the most ambitious goal in blindfolded SM64 has finally been broken. Bubzia has broken the previous world record by more than 40 seconds, with a final time of 19 minutes and 43 seconds.

The sub 20 minute barrier is an achievement that many people strive for when they start out speedrunning visually. Bubzia has written speedrunning history by achieving this milestone while entirely blindfolded. More than 7.5 years after his first blindfolded 16 Star speedrun, this is what the speedrun has evolved into.

I am so incredibly happy that I pushed through all the hardships that this challenge has thrown into my face. It has been a really fun blast, there have been so many new viewers to blindfolded speedruns in general, and many sticked to me grinding this challenge daily for the last year.

I honestly don't have much to say about the run, it can still be improved and maybe I will return one day. But as cliché as it might sound, the much more important part than me breaking this milestone and the world record is the absolutely amazing and kind community that I have. Thank you all so incredibly much!

There will be more blindfolded speedruns in the future, stay tuned! 70 Star will be broken next!

yea that sounds nasty

just don't patent anything, other companies build a product around an unpatented idea, then you patent it and sue them? now their entire product is ruined??

this makes no sense, that would mean the optimal play is to not patent anything until someone else starts doing it

I still don't think the best solution to an under-staffed team is to try to make a competing under-staffed team. I think just contributing would be more helpful for all, especially with the plugin support coming soon to Lemmy

how long until Sublinks catches up to Lemmy?

[-] Die4Ever@programming.dev 21 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

In order to improve interoperability with Mastodon and other microblogging platforms, Lemmy now automatically includes a hashtag with new posts. The hashtag is based on the community name, so posts to /c/lemmy will automatically have the hashtag #lemmy. This makes Lemmy posts much easier to discover.

this should be interesting

for reference, this is what it looks like on Mastodon, the post to !announcements@lemmy.ml it gets the hashtag for announcements

https://mastodon.social/@dessalines@lemmy.ml/112576601493225058

it's not really part of the message text, it's separate

image proxying also sounds good

I'm surprised they're still on 0.18.4. They made that big post complaining about moderation actions not federating, then the 0.18.5 hotfix came out and the only change was that fix, and they never updated anyways? I even put a comment on their post to let them know the hotfix for their issue. There's no database changes, it's the simplest update.

[-] Die4Ever@programming.dev 20 points 3 years ago

It’s a basic catch-22 - you need new users to attract new users.

This is the best thing about federation.

If the Fediverse became really popular and I created a new alternative to Lemmy/Kbin that was significantly better than both, it would be way easier to gain the momentum required to become a real player in the field compared to trying to compete with Reddit when most people aren't in the Fediverse yet.

[-] Die4Ever@programming.dev 19 points 3 years ago

lemmy.world really needs to close signups and the creation of new communities, until they can improve their uptime

or they should at least be removed from https://join-lemmy.org/instances maybe it could track the uptime and use that to build the list?

but Reddit actually does go down pretty often too

[-] Die4Ever@programming.dev 20 points 3 years ago

But we already have horizontal scaling in the form of separate instances. We just need to do a better job staying spread out. Making individual instances bigger is not a good thing, it makes everything more centralized.
