Thank you, it’s a lovely offer and I’m flattered by it. But I’m not sure I’d be very good at drawing a ship. It’s not in my natural realm and would have to spend a bit of time on it. I’ve had requests for tattoo designs before and realised I’m in a different market. You’d be commissioning an original artwork so I’d have to charge my usual commission rates (around NZ$1000) which is more than most people are willing to pay for a tattoo design. I’m not entirely shut off to the idea if you’re still keen after that, but I’m assuming probably not.

Looking forward to seeing more to come! Awesome, having a local life drawing group is so beneficial! I'm involved with one too. My advice is to be consistent with going every week. You'll be surprised how fast you grow that way. You also get the advantage of the collective working environment...it's like being back at art school.

Thank you! I've been doing it about 5 years.

Cool! I like these! Nice to see more nudes on here. Were they done in a life drawing session or from photos? Hope you keep posting.

Thank you! Yes, the calligraphy brush does give me a lot of control over the line thickness, except “more control” might not be the best description for it 😅. They’re a lot harder to use than the usual western brush. But I’ve done a bit of training in Japanese calligraphy and heaps of practice to be able to control it right.

This one is particularly minimal so it doesn’t surprise me if it’s hard to see. I painted another one from the same pose (I painted them from a live model in a life drawing session). I wonder if this will help you see it.

I kinda like the don’t be a dick rule. Feels very New Zealand.

I want to add some content to help grow the community here. I’m wondering if I should mark this as NSFW? I can edit it if I need to. Just wondering where I should draw the line.

edit: changed sumi ink to acrylic

Quite the compliment really, thank you! I have taken some inspiration from him, particularly when I watched the doco of him painting - The Mystery of Picasso (1956)

His direct approach to painting a line was something I knew I wanted for my own work (like a weird strong urge type thing). I guess that then mixed with an urge to capture the same energy in calligraphy brush work. And then mix that with my love for Egon Schiele, add 10 years of practice and wallah!

Thank you! I'm enjoying the Lemmy community so far. I appreciate that the comments here have had some thought put into them (a refreshing change from Instagram).

I sell pieces myself and through a gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. I post worldwide.

You can DM me if you want to chat more. Check me out on Instagram if you have it @dominiquemarriott. Or have a look at my gallery's website.

Not a dumb question at all. The variation of shades comes from the amount of water mixed into it. But I can also get some variation from how much I push down on the brush.
