What he owes them is jail time.

I wish these titles would be more "politicians beholden to lobbyists want you invade your privacy" instead of sounding like it's inevitable

Everyone always makes it sound like everyone else was already in a union and tech workers were snearing at them, but tbh I'm not sure I know a single person that is part of a union in any field. They just aren't that common in recent history outside of a few specific areas, and everyone is finally seeing the need together. (I would have thought the insane crunch and week long mandatory on call a lot of people deal with in tech would have been enough but apparently it takes the threat of layoffs to get people serious)

You already can't "sideload" without navigating the options and going through a big scary pop-up saying you better know what you're doing. In other words, it's already locked down enough.

This is not about making grandma safe. It is about control.

Before the internet my mother wrote down things I asked about and we looked them up at the library on the weekend.

Java can be pretty damn efficient for long running processes because it optimizes at runtime. It also can use new hardware features (like cpu instructions) without having to compile for specific platforms so in practice it gets a boost there. Honestly, the worst thing about Java is the weird corporate ecosystem that produces factoryfactory and other overengineered esoteric weirdness. It can also do FFI with anything that can bind via c ABI so if some part of the program needed some hand optimized code like something from BLAS it could be done that way.

All that to say it doesn't matter what language they use anyway, because rewriting from scratch with a short timeline is an insane thing to do that never works.

I think rust has good ideas and may even become the default systems language in the mid-term. I find it irritating that there is a very vocal subset of rust proponents that tend to insist that every project in every language needs to be rewritten in rust immediately. I suspect that is also why other people are down on rust.

Meanwhile, llms are less useful at helping me write code than intellij was a decade ago
