It's very important. I use KDE. Historically I've used xfce and lxde. I want something with sane defaults that will let me tweak things. I very much don't want something that wants to limit you by pretending you're on a touch device when you're on mouse and keyboard, or insists it knows better than you what you want
Small sample but everyone i know dropped it on the increase to 30 bucks. One of them had been primarily playing PlayStation and xbox for the last decade but has gotten and primarily plays steam deck now.

- specifically says that packages are not thoroughly vetted
- does not recommend using yay or another AUR helper (which is the primary thing I recommend against)
- has a frequently asked question section that is fairly technical and should indicate that it is not for the faint of heart
