I have several Mac laptops running Linux with hardware from 2012 to 2020. I find that EndeavourOS works best and WiFi works out of the box.

It uses the wl drivers generally (NOT b43) with DKMS so the module is automatically rebuilt when you upgrade the kernel. You can just upgrade the kernel using the package manager and it “just works” when you reboot. I have been using Linux on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air systems for years and never had a problem (2012, 2013, 2017, 2020). Also iMacs back to 2008.

If you have a T2 chip system, you need a special kernel and apple an wifi/bluetooth firmware blob. In most distros you have to extract the firmware from macOS yourself but it is available in the AUR so there is a special T2 addition of EndeavourOS that makes everything work out of the box. These are the 2019 or 2020 systems I think.

The issue is that politics in Canada is increasingly adopting the team sports US model. Instead of being FOR certain policies or ideas, people are AGAINST somebody else. In that game, you only need two teams.

I believe that NTsync delivers better compatibility. I do not remember the details but Fsync can cause problems sometimes. So this is more like performance without compromise.

Now that it is in the kernel, I would expect Wine to move to it and for Proton to follow suit.

One less hack to maintain.

Having these guys shill for Tesla is not going to help the stock. It looks desperate. It turns off the core buyers even more.

There are two groups of Republican at this point. There are quite a small number of ultra rich people. There is an army of mostly not that well off folks. The latter cannot afford Teslas and have seen them as the enemy forever. This is going to highlight that the main GOP principle is supporting rich allies. It shines sunlight on a very dangerous fact.

Elon is really unpopular right now and “regular” republicans feel like he and DOGE are attacking them. Then they see the Trump administration rallying to support him. The GOP does not care about them but does care about him.

This could backfire on the GOP and it is not going to sell a lot of cars.

I will not use a system with snap and has nothing to do with being proprietary.

One of the reasons that I could not use Ubuntu is that I cannot control using snap or not. They even use it to install apps that you install via apt.

The fact that the only time I did use a system with snap left me with the impression that it is an absolute performance pig certainly does not help.

Modern Chromebooks are typically slower and more resource limited than even quite old laptops ( like Thinkpads ). They may also be difficult to service and expand.

Chromebooks as a class may become common devices. Sadly though, I think most of them are destined to be e-waste.

I re-wrote my Tesla firmware in Rust. It is faster and more secure. Self-driving is no problem when you use a safe language.

Honestly, why are we even selling cars to people who do not take these basic steps?

It seems a fairly explicit goal of systemd to redefine Linux as a unified platform rather than as a kernel that can run any one of many implementations of many different services. I assume this is not just the systemd lead but also a goal of Red Hat.

Personally, while I am ok with systemd defining itself as a single source for all this functionality, I hate that they are taking away ( or making it hard at least ) to have independent implementations of these services.

What Chinera is doing with dinit and turnstile is really interesting. It would be nice to have feature comparable approaches to the systemd monolith that distributions could choose from.

Calamares uses the QML / Qt toolkit. Most of the people involved in Calamares are also involved in the KDE Project.

XFCE use the GTK toolkit.

So, it is totally reasonable to say that KDE is “more native”.

While Wayland maybe a factor, KDE itself will not be fully Wayland compatible until Plasma 6 next year. So that does not really explain the timing of this move.

I use XFCE myself so I am a bit nervous about the change. We will see.

The brand promise of Reddit was pretty simple—it was the “Front page of the Internet”.

It did not get popular because of the sub-communities or that there was a sub for everything ( at least not at first ).

Reddit became a thing because it was a single destination that aggregated and curated interesting content from the web that “interesting” people could comment on. If you were only going to make one stop on the Internet, it could be Reddit. Uses could share the main URL by word of mouth and new users would get the same experience. As content grew, Reddit became high ranking in search results.

Lemmy does not really offer the Reddit experience to a new user. New users do not want an offer to find an instance or create one, they want to experience the content, get addicted, and come back.

The closest Lemmy has right now to early Reddit is Lemmy World but how do new users know that? Actually, I guess old.lemmy.world is the closest. :)
