But having some kind of probation period also seems like an obvious feature to me (that should be optional, not mandatory). It was not uncommon in the past (on BBSes and old forums) to have new members' posts require approval before anyone could see them. I suspect it partially went away because big platforms needed to "growth hack" and anything that slows down the influx of new users is bad.

I think the academic advice about Wikipedia was sadly mistaken. It's true that Wikipedia contains errors, but so do other sources. The problem was that it was a new thing and the idea that someone could vandalize a page startled people. It turns out, though, that Wikipedia has pretty good controls for this over a reasonable time-window. And there's a history of edits. And most pages are accurate and free from vandalism.
Just as you should not uncritically read any of your other sources, you shouldn't uncritically read Wikipedia as a source. But if you are going to uncritically read, Wikipedia's far from the worst thing to blindly trust.

Lots of businesses have and do exist without a subscription model. I'm fond of the Paprika Recipe Manager, for example, which asks a one-time payment for each major version. All commercial software worked this way in the 80s.
Yup. I've been in academia and in private business. Academia pays terribly and expects a fuck-ton more work. I'm sure there's places where you can just sleaze by without doing much, but I never saw them. (Which isn't to say that all academic work is good work. I saw people who got far doing poor research, but they were also working very hard at it.)
