I'm trying to get back into making art and I know having a decent place to share it with others is essential. No point in making something nobody will see.

I'm hoping someone here knows about a decent platform to share content, which also has a No AI stance (and hopefully, measures taken against ai mining).

So far the only one I heard of was Cara, and it's not bad but it didn't hook me. Maybe I should give it another go, I haven't checked it in a long time. Last time I checked, it relied on artists using nightshade and other poisons, but iirc those methods are always lagging behind in the arms race, and require the artist constantly re-updating with newly poisoned versions of their work. This can get very time consuming.

I know Artstation lets you label no ai on your work, but I don't think that actually does anything that protects my work from getting mined.

One important thing is that I need to be able to post with my real name, so I don't believe another community here will be the final answer. However, having said that, if you know of any solid art or artist communities where these topics are discussed frequently feel free to point me that way. I would still benefit from getting in touch with people in a similar situation as myself.

Please help me recover some faith in humanity... Thanks

So there's this post I saw, and the headline says Meta is now arguing uploading pirated books would be considered fair use.

Is it possible to use someone's use of an argument against them in the future? So for example say in the future, in a different case, Meta argues that someone harmed them in some way by uploading pirated books. Can the other party retort with something akin to "ah but that's not what you said about pirated books three years ago, you only complain if it's unfavorable to you"?

Also I noticed this would be the third post in a row about legal questions. I feel like I'm unintentionally contributing to a pattern/trend here, apologies

This morning I found out someone broke into my car and stole some low value junk I had in my glovebox along with a jacket and other stuff. I was home all along and didn't hear it happening. I am usually one to check twice that the car locks when I leave it, and if for whatever reason I don't then it auto locks after a while.

Now I'm a bit clueless with this stuff so I'm wondering 1) how they opened it without triggering the alarm and 2) can I do anything to prevent this from happening again? Any contraption/device I can use ?

TIA

I rarely use over 2GB of data per month. Usually most of my data traffic happens over wifi. Curious.

If you want to know why I'm asking:

My phone provider just decided to upgrade my subscription plan some ridiculous amount. I was on a cheap prepaid 18GB every 28 days plan, with data rollover. (I got nearly 900 GB of rollover data just sitting there, accumulated over the years).

Now they increased both their price and data cap about +60%. For me this is absolutely unnecessary. I was already paying for more than what I used.

Then I tried to switch providers, and realized this is the new baseline in the country, at least for monthly prepaid. Eventually I found a few providers that offer something more affordable, but it's only long expiry plans with a lot less data. Works for me though, not complaining.

I'm just surprised with the sheer amounts in most monthly plans, am I some kind of low usage freak?

Edit: so far Shuma Gorath (from Marvel's Dr Strange in 1973) is the only example. Know another? Please let us know

According to Wikipedia, the Beholder is a Dungeons and Dragons original creation and it is copyrighted. Its first appearance was in 1975.

In case you are not familiar with these, a beholder is basically a floating eye with tentacles that also have eyes, often able to shoot rays off the eyes. You have probably seen some similar creature type in a myriad other media such as videogames, tv shows and whatnot.

Now I'm really surprised something like this only surfaced in the 70s. Is there anything similar in any type of media or culture prior to the 70's? The only thing that pops to mind is the ancient biblical angels with abstract forms and many eyes, but I'm hoping someone here can show me more and better examples.

Or not. I don't know.

I'm a casual gamer so perhaps this has been made hundreds of times and I just ignore it.

So let's say you play your game, things don't go well so you go back and reload a save. Now, with your current knowledge you can get things right and that's usually how it goes with games.

Is there any game that takes this into the plot as something necessary by design (say for example, the main character is supposed to be clairvoyant or something)? You play, your character gets things wrong the first time, but now when you reload your character will obviously do everything right, almost as if they were clairvoyant/psychic/etc because that's exactly what your character is. The only way to beat the game is to explore a variety of outcomes in order to gather information until you get it right, but instead of this being immersion breaking it's actually supported by the plot itself.

Not sure if I'm making sense here or maybe I ate the wrong kind of cookies, you tell me...

I'm just a casual gamer, I absolutely loved the score in Skyrim and Oblivion but when trying to find other good ambience music for caves/ruins/dungeons I was a bit stumped. I've found people creating this kind of ambient soundtracks and that's great, but I'm still curious about the videogame ones. I tried searching for that and failed.

I'm looking for eerie, natural or mysterious types of tracks, nothing too high energy. The platform or genre of the game doesn't matter.

Have you got any good examples?

Pretty much what the title says, either or would suit me. I just need a place to share my sads, I got an injury and my tongue will never be the same.

What do you call someone who is mediocre at best on a variety of fields but likes to pose as a polished and cultured person?

I'm not sure if I'm explaining this well. This person has a "I'm better than you" or "I know better and say it best" attitude, likes to pass as sensible and intellectual but when you contrast how they try to come across with what they actually do, how indifferent they are to others, and the quality of the skills they like to boast about it doesn't add up. It's all superficial, there is no substance to them, and no apparent self awareness ever of any of these shortcomings.

It's like a special brand of "full of it". Is there a word for it?

You don't. I feel for him. He just needs time and you have to understand some people need their privacy and there is no amount of time spent together that can change that. I'm one of those people. I'd be equally tense with a friend's family or my in laws if I had them, no matter how much I like them, no matter how well we get along.

Edit: that being said, it's possible he'll loosen up as you say but there is also a chance the more pressure you put on him, the more you insist on welcoming him, will backfire.

Just take it easy.

I disagree with the glasses part as counterargument. Pizzas are sold by diameter in places that offer large and small - some even do medium. I also believe it would be nicer to have wider burgers instead of taller

I obviously don't know... :(

Edit: Thanks for the answers - now I know! Where I live it doesn't spread that easily, and often when it's growing well it disappears overnight or in a matter of days thanks to caterpillars or grasshoppers. I didn't know it would grow out of control in other places.

I appreciate how well made are the characters in this style, I immediately recognized them and the comic strip they were into.

No mention of dbzer0. com anywhere in the meme or text? To any newcomers, if you wouldn't download a car then you don't need to know about that instance.

Can they live that long? Maybe one of them remembered and had a nostalgia moment, then the rest of the pod caught up

Hi. I'm an artist, and my answer comes from my personal experience and not from academic research on your topic.

Turns out painting and sculpture pose different challenges to artists. If your goal is realism, you first need to understand your subject, and then you need to translate it to the medium.

One key aspect in the process is finding good reference material to work from. Turns out human faces and bodies occupy three dimensional space, and they are somewhat readily accessible to artists. A talented sculptor can study a model and replicate it as a sculpture; it's not easy, but there isn't much else to be done.

Now let's look at painting. Often people think painting and drawing is easier than sculpting because it's more accessible, but that's not necessarily the case especially if you aim for realism. The artist needs to use the brain and translate a lot, and I mean an awful lot, of the information seen in the model (3d space) into 2d. They need to remove one dimension from it, without breaking the illusion. This is why it's ten times more difficult to sketch from life than it is to sketch from photographic reference; photos already did half the job for you. And back in the day photography wasn't a thing.

This is very hard already, but on top of that comes color. Most people can see color well enough, the difficult part is understanding how to translate that to a flat, uniform surface that doesn't emit light. From the get go this means you will have to crunch down and remove color information, ie you can't paint the sun and expect it to shine like the real thing, instead you will have to either make everything else too dark or not paint the sun just to keep the lighting relationships making sense. Your brain has evolved to see color shades, to take into account lighting conditions and contrast and a lot of other things. And yet, you hardly realize you are seeing all these things because what matters to you is what color things are meant to be, not what color things really are in a myriad of lighting conditions. In other words, you don't have a color picker tool ability that lets you easily replicate any color you see. This takes years of training.

Then as if this alone wasn't difficult enough, you now have to deal with pigment chemistry and colors that dry different shades, incompatible or unstable pigment combinations, hard to find pigments, etc. These issues still have to be taken into consideration today, but in the past even more so since people had a lot less options available for a variety of reasons.

I hope by now you're getting the idea that you have far far more opportunities to botch a painting than a sculpture. Take any civilization and with a few generations of skilled sculptors passing on the tricks of the trade you can reach realistic results. But it took centuries and a lot of thinking and writing and studying to start achieving realistic painting standards. I'm not surprised at all.

Supermarkets and businesses throwing food away and not allowing people to take it for free. ("If I can't sell it nobody can have it").

It's not an awful lot of calories in difference. Pecans, like all nuts, are highly caloric because they're high in fat. It just so happens that your praline pecans replace part of the pecans with sugar, which is less caloric than fats. So 28 gr of praline pecans have less cals than 28gr regular pecans.

Why does it feel like an AI generated image? Am I the only one getting this vibe?

I'm no expert but these are called Fairy Circles iirc. Apparently whatever substrate they grow on is consumed, so they expand in a circular fashion- think of burning a paper starting from a point in its center.
