The article was referring to the cost to replace them, which would be both the equipent (camera, solar panel, pole, mounting hardware) and labor.

Edit: so yes, all told it appears to cost $3k to have a camera. But the camera piece alone would cost a lot less than that.

Thanks for adding that. It’s that possibility that made me say they should talk to her today.

This must be a terrifying situation for you. I know you regret violating her privacy and don’t want to tell her that, but given what you know now, I think you need to talk with her about it. I’d recommend doing it soon (like today).

Do some quick reading first (and more reading later). Look up “suicidal ideation,” especially if you aren’t familiar with the concept. Suicidal ideation doesn’t usually have a direct cause, especially one that can be treated. Treatment is generally focused on helping the person understand and manage the thoughts. Hopefully she has a therapist that knows about this and is helping her.

Be understanding about why she hasn’t told you. She probably wants to be treated as a strong, “normal” person. Telling you, or anyone, puts her at risk of being treated as broken. Same goes for depression.

Listen and be compassionate. People like to give easy, “obvious” solutions to these kind of issues. DONT DO THAT. She isn’t stupid. There are no easy solutions.

The best thing you can do is be understanding, listen, and assure her you won’t treat her different.

And—at the very least—wear some safety glasses.

Unemployment numbers are counted based on how many people are collecting unemployment.

Unemployment insurance claims aren’t used to measure the unemployment rate in the US. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump thinks they are… Nor would I be surprised if he tries (or is trying) to change the measure so that it is based on unemployment claims.

To be clear I’m not saying the US’s unemployment numbers are good—they are distorted to make the unemployment number look smaller than it is. One issue is that People must be actively looking for work to be considered “unemployed”, otherwise they aren’t part of the “labor force” and don’t count at all. It doesn’t matter if they are capable of work, want to work, and spent a year straight looking for work; if they aren’t actively looking now, they don’t count. Additionally, if a person is doing any work at all—even a few hours a week at minimum wage, or doing a bit of unpaid work for a family business—they are considered an employed member of the labor force. It doesn’t matter if they are broke, homeless, and desperately looking for a job; they count as an employed member of the labor force.

That’s because it is poetry. Mom might need a psych eval, but it’s still poetry (and I love it).

The button has a part number on the housing - but I’m pretty sure the apartment manager would frown on you opening the machine up.

One idea: find the model number of the washing machine and contact the manufacturer to see if they can give you a part number for the button and/or sell you a replacement part.

Thanks for the details and links! If I ever get around to building my own, I’ll let you know how it goes.

I’m not much of an engineer - my approach tends to be a combination of “that seems like it would be sturdy,” “I’ll just copy this design that seems sturdy,” and “I’m not sure, so I’ll overbuild it just in case”. How did you decide on your structural design/bracing?

That is gorgeous! Now I feel like I need to build one to replace my harbor freight workbench… I guess I’ll add that to my ever growing pile of projects :)

What are the two doodads sticking out of the dog holes on the angle brace?

And any tips on picking out flip down casters? Seems like that would be a great feature.

my imperfect understanding is as follows:

Leavening is produced by the chemical reaction of an acid mixing with a base. This reaction is strongest when the acid and base are balanced (or close to it); the more out of balance they are, the weaker the reaction.

Baking powder is a balanced acid and base, so it provides the best leavening when the rest of the recipe is ph neutral. If the rest of the recipe is acidic (or basic) it will weaken the reaction. It will still work, though; it just won’t rise as much as it would have if the recipe were in balance.

So… baking powder is a “safe bet”. It will still leaven if you use it with natural coca powder (acidic), but you would probably get more rise if you (A) used Dutch process instead, or (B) add the right amount of baking soda to neutralize the extra acidity.

GIANT CAVEAT: I like food science. I cook a lot… but I don’t bake a lot. So I’m mostly just reciting stuff I’ve learned. I probably don’t have this all precisely right. And I’m not sure significant the effect of extra acidity is; For all I know the effect on leavening is small enough that it doesn’t really matter.
