You reminded me of a story I recently read, where the author highlighted just how much awesome programming someone had done by describing how their hands were cramping up.

It's like estimating how well an artist paints by looking at how much paint is on their clothes, or judging how good a cook is by how many cuts and burns they have. The actions that cause those things are incidental to the process, not central, and an excessive amount points to incompetence, not hard and skillful work.

I use Linux on hardware older and less capable than yours, and usually the only real show-stopper I find is a lack of Vulkan support. I don't use any nVidia hardware, but my understanding is that older chips are supported decently by current Linux drivers. So I'd say you'll probably be fine.

As for ten years from now, it's uncommon for Linux software to remove features, and even if it happens, there's virtually always a way for you stay on an old version if you really need to, because there are no forced updates. If you're careful you can sometimes even keep the old versions of things for old software that needs it, while still having the latest version for software that can use it.

Who else remembers seeing images like this -- that would've taken a few seconds to a few minutes to render even on high-end graphics workstations of the time -- presented in gaming rags as examples of what PS1/N64/Saturn and later PS2/GameCube/DreamCast/XBox were "going to be capable of producing"?

Because in the English version of MGS that's not "hidden" in the manual (or on the back of the box). You get the Colonel calling on the radio every ten seconds during that fight, virtually screaming at you "Hey you dumb kid, switch to the second controller port already!"

AI coding is an improvement on infinite monkey Shakespeare in the sense that it only types whole words from a dictionary. Although that dictionary has been built from a mix of classic literature and SNS posts.

When the Wii launched, a few pundits called it "two GameCubes taped together", which I thought was a bit rude and overly dismissive.

Years later, I started really looking into the technical side of things, and oh my goodness it really is almost two GameCubes taped together. I mean, it works wonderfully and I'm not knocking it, but IIRC the majority of what's under the hood is either an upgraded version of what was in the GCN, or a doubling of the capacity (in some cases literally two) of the same component.

It's not a really big thing, but it is a pet peeve of mine (and some others); the name of the series isn't "Dues Ex" but "Deus Ex" (day-us ex), as in "deus ex machina" (day-us ex mack-in-a).

"Deus ex machina" literally translates as "God from (the) machine", and originally referred to a type of stage prop used in ancient plays, then in more modern times the term came to refer more generally to the sort of plot device that used that prop, which is a previously unmentioned person or thing that suddenly appears to save the heroes from an otherwise inescapable threat. At some time in the 60s or 70s it started to become popular to use it in a more literal sense in sci-fi stories about machine intelligence or cyborgs.

Oh hell, you gave me a PTSD flashback!

It's the late 90s. My mother suddenly discovers File Explorer on her refurbished commodity Wintel box and decides that all this messy clutter has to go. Never mind that the drive was 80% empty when delivered and I didn't expect her to come close to filling it before it was replaced. Fortunately I had already backed up everything that looked important or interesting.

One day she calls from the office, "I don't need this 'Windows' any more, do I?"

"What? Wait! Don't do anything!" I walk in and she's got C:/Windows highlighted and the cursor is hovering over "Delete".

"I already have Windows installed on this computer, so I don't need this any more, do I?" Spoken more as a statement than a question. It took several minutes of forced calm explanation to get her to accept that this "Windows" directory WAS the Windows that's installed on the machine. She still wasn't happy that she could see it in File Explorer, though. So untidy!

To flip that around, if you wanted to do a thing just for the sake of doing it, what does it matter if you don't get an achievement for it?

I agree with most of what you said, except for the Windows examples. The pages that you linked begin with three-line TL;DRs that are enough for any barely-competent user to find and modify the necessary settings. While the full instructions may be tortuously detailed, are they actually hard to understand?

And sure, those Windows pages don't advance the user's knowledge in any meaningful way, but neither does blindly copying and pasting a line of shell commands.

By the way, while I appreciate that we're talking about if and how CLI is superior to GUI, and not Linux versus Windows...

Where-as Linux users can easily share commands and fixes or tests over a simple irc chat, because the command line reaches the whole system.

... both of those tasks can be done via CLI in Windows, too. I am very happy that I switched to Linux, but there's no reason to misrepresent the other guys.
