With x86 Macs I would agree they do...but with the ARM Macs...I'm not so sure. They're so unique hardware wise it starts to depend on how you define PC. If you define it as the acronym "Personal Computer" then a Mac is always a PC regardless of what you run on it. If we're talking IBM PC then modern Macs are never that. (I think the latter definition is generally more helpful as otherwise PC vs Mac makes no sense and phones become PCs etc)

Hmmm, that's a hard one for me. They're both very bad but personally having to submit ID makes me less comfortable...that being said I wouldn't call government censorship a win either. Maybe the main reason I find ID to be more concerning isn't because of some objective reason but rather because it's in your face rather than being in the shadows and humans don't do well with threats they can't see. Ultimately I think you might be right and I'm not advocating for either...just saying that currently the US cyber laws make me feel less ICK... although that might be a very subjective viewpoint. I think the real take away is all western nations seem to be going down a kinda bad path but that also isn't new unfortunately.

I'm not sure how take it down is related. It is unfortunate how broad the scope can be but in my opinion it's still less of a violation than being required to dox yourself to use services.

Yeah I understand that. And as I noted with the exception of firmware which almost universally requires running very out of date hardware I do the same. I'd like to get there with my phone but I haven't managed it yet. I have written off firmware being FOSS because as mentioned. You almost always need very old hardware for that outside of embedded devices. And if you go down the firmware rabbit hole you probably have to draw the line somewhere. Platform firmware is the one everyone focuses on but what about GPU or NIC firmware? What about microcode or firmware embedded in the IME or PSP? Yes you can sometimes neuter the IME but that doesn't apply to all CPUs. It's just an unwinnable rabbit hole without going to a fully open computing platform.

People say this but I'm not sure I believe that. Keep in mind Google is the only android OEM that allows you to do a bootloader unlock and root without an exploit, it's officially supported as a developer configuration.

Tbh I'm not an apple person either. The comment about macOS being on 26 caught my eye and I went and did some research.

Yeah, at one point vulkan was called glNext so I guess it isn't that wild. Although I'm surprised they would have started development on a driver before any spec was fully agreed on. Unless they just reworked their mantle driver to become their vulkan driver?

The windows vulkan driver is called XGL? That's not confusing lol

It's slightly amusing that with X.Org slowly becoming totally unmaintained that every WM is gonna end up in this category as Wayland compositors displace them.

Interesting, before my system76 laptop I had an HP, and before that a Dell. My desktop has had both gigabyte and Asus mobos in it over the years. I personally run Debian but I self compile my kernel, mostly for debloat and minor preference changes.
