I havent really kept tabs on how the “everything” feed works. Does it show posts from small communities here and there?

If you want to see posts from small communities (balanced with the larger ones) then select "Scaled" instead of "Hot" or "Active".

If you're sick of politics and tech then subscribe to communities you like and sort by "Subscribed" instead of "Local" or "All". Look here for relevant communities:

MEMES, SOCIAL MEDIA REPOSTS, AND HUMOR (NON-POLITICAL)

Most of these are currently active. (except for the ones with a * which were less active last I checked). Sometimes politics sneaks in but that's not the focus.

Yeah, my first thought was wireless hotspot from a cell phone. Tho I'm on a plan with very little data bc I'm mostly on wifi.

Check out !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com ... people there are actively thinking about ways to help people migrate. To some extent also !lemmyapps@lemmy.world

I don't think the barrier to entry is all that bad.... if you install Jerboa or Boost you're immediately presented with Lemmy content without worrying about creating an account... then you can get a feel for whether you like it or not.

It's only a problem if someone is told they must choose a server and create an account to see Lemmy content at all. Ideally people would just be pointed to a server and told to select "Scaled" to get a sense of the smaller communities...

Vibranium, duh. They should pay us for not divering the asteroid.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

ofc they understood it but... it's not like they were just going to shut down DC and Marvel. Instead, a lot of folks went and started independent publishers, many of which do not focus on superheros, and now we have library shelves full of graphic novels in various genres.

But who's going to pay for it? Not MY tax dollars!

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 week ago

Fun fact: the title of the Spanish dub is "Matar o no matar, éste es el problema" i.e. "To kill or not to kill, that is the question"! I discovered this bc the movie is not free on youtube or archive but the Spanish dub is free on tubi (with optional English subtitles!): https://tubitv.com/movies/576524/matar-o-no-matar-ste-es-el-problema-doblado

A billion kilometers? How much is that? A few miles? Half a parsec? A couple pounds sterling? This is really worrisome...

Back in the 80s and 90s there was this cartoonist called Ace Backwords who would give out his cartoons so you could reprint them for free. He did a lot of them about counter-culture topics, so if you had a newsletter or zine and you needed content, a lot of times you'd put in an Ace Backwords cartoon. (this was just before the internet era, so you had a lot more newsletters and zines.)

Ace Backwords quit cartooning in the early 2000s. Now he "sleeps rough on the streets" in Berkeley (San Francisco area) and blogs about his feral cats, homelessness, and memories of living a counter-culture life.

I got this cartoon from his blog and cleaned up the contrast a bit, see the original here: https://acebackwords5.wordpress.com/2024/06/19/609/

People's Park in Berkeley, California is a parcel of land owned by the University of California, Berkeley. Located east of Telegraph Avenue and bound by Haste and Bowditch Streets and Dwight Way, People's Park was a symbol during the radical political activism of the late 1960s.[3][4][5][6] Formerly a park, the site is now under construction for new university student housing and homeless supportive housing.[7]

While the land is owned by the University of California, People's Park was de facto established as a public park on April 20, 1969, by local activists.[8] On May 13, University Chancellor Roger W. Heyns announced plans to construct a soccer field on the site, leading to a confrontation two days later between protesters and police on May 15.[9] Known as "Bloody Thursday", police used tear gas and opened fire on the protesters to quell the riot, resulting notably in the death of James Rector.[9] In 1984, the city of Berkeley declared it a historical and cultural landmark.[10]

In 2018, the university published a plan to build 1,100 new units of student housing and 125 units of supportive housing for homeless people on the site, but a small contingent of activists delayed those plans through opposition including protests,[11][12] lawsuits,[13][14] sabotage of construction equipment,[15] and trespassing on the site.[16] The housing plans were backed by the Berkeley City Council, Mayor Jesse Arreguin, Berkeley's California Assembly representative Buffy Wicks and California Governor Gavin Newsom, and a majority of UC Berkeley students.[17]

Pending a judgment in a legal challenge to the university's housing plan, the park was closed off in early January 2024, when construction workers and police surrounded the park with a 17-foot high wall of shipping containers to prevent trespassing.[18] On June 6, the California Supreme Court unanimously ruled in the university's favor, allowing construction to proceed.[19][20][21] Consequently, construction officially started on July 22.[22]

As the youtube description explains, the first minute and a half of the video is from a different performance earlier that year.

The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy is the subject of today's "monsterdon" viewing over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching Sunday, Dec 8, 2024 at 9pm ET / 8PM CT, which is 2am Monday UTC
  • then follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary

How to watch:

The evil Dr. Krupp (Luis Aceves Castañeda), a mad scientist also known as "the Bat", managed to escape the snake pit into which he was thrown by Popoca the Aztec Mummy (Ángel di Stefani) in the previous film and continues his efforts to steal a valuable Aztec treasure from Popoca's tomb. Krupp builds a robot with a human head and brain in it (which is thus, technically, a cyborg), planning to use it to destroy the mummy should he return to thwart his plans. Krupp's former colleague and original finder of the mummy, Dr. Eduardo Almada (Ramón Gay), his wife Flora, and his associate Pinacate, all work to stop the mad scientist from completing his plans.

You may recall that I recently used my whiteboard. Well yesterday I wiped my whiteboard clean, in case I need to use it again! I started by just using a paper napkin, but that was smearing. Luckily, I have some hand sanitizer nearby, so I used a couple drops of that to get it really clean.

I was going to take a picture but then I was worried that some crafty person will be able to read the scratches and bumps, or maybe the reflection. So instead here is a computer-generated image of what my whiteboard looks like now:

Bonus story in comments.

I have a calendar where I write appointments.

I have a doctor's appointment that I had to write on the calendar.

I have a physical whiteboard where I write a "to do" list.

A couple days ago, I wrote on my whiteboard: "put doctor's appointment on the calendar".

Today I put the doctor's appointment on the calendar.

I have not yet erased "put doctor's appointment on the calendar" from the whiteboard. I look at it and feel a little proud that I accomplished something today.

Maybe tomorrow I'll erase my whiteboard.

This movie was covered a couple months ago. I'm re-posting because it is the subject of tomorrow's "monsterdon" viewing over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching Sunday, Dec 1, 2024 at 9pm ET / 8PM CT, which is 2am Monday UTC
  • then follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary that is both witty and wise.

How to watch:

It is 1980, and the United States Air Force's Space Exploration Wing has bases on the Moon and on the eve of a mission to Mars. When another of its two-member crewed Pegasus spacecraft mysteriously disappears, rumors begin circulating of space monsters and phantom planets.

A college freshman who trains in martial arts is beaten up at work by a racist gang. His co-worker, a Chinese cook, beats the gang up and trains the young man in kung fu. When a tournament is to be held, the teacher tells the student that he will not teach him for money. However, when the gang beats up the student's best friend, the student now must make the choice of entering the tournament or keeping the promise to his teacher.

You know this movie. You've seen it a million times before a million different ways. But this one is campy in its very own way, which makes it special.

A fictionalized account of a true story, it centers on the controversial 60 Minutes segment about Jeffrey Wigand, a whistleblower in the tobacco industry,[3] covering his and CBS producer Lowell Bergman's struggles as they defend his testimony against efforts to discredit and suppress it by CBS and Wigand's former employer.

Though not a box office success, The Insider received acclaim from critics, who praised Crowe's portrayal of Wigand and Mann's direction. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role (for Russell Crowe).
