wouldn’t it be better to do it on our own terms rather than in a global catastrophe?

The catastrophy is inevitable, it's just a question of whether any humans will survive.

For example CO2 has a delayed effect of ~40years (if I remember correctly). The effects of global warming are very much obvious now, but the yearly output hasn't at any point dropped to those levels since.

Discord, lol... At least use matrix if you're going down the road of suboptimal communication.

I'm aware of Debian's reputation for not having the most up-to-date software in its repository

Yes, it's a stable distro. Contrary to what most Linux users think, that term only means that the distro is unchanging. That means only necessary updates are released (security fixes for example).

when it will make available the upcoming major release of GIMP to 3.0.

Maybe in the next version, if the gimp release happens soon enough it gets tested.

Just use an external package manager like flatpak to install fresh packages. The only reason I could run MX (Debian) for about a year was because I installed almost every user package through nix, and used Debian ones for the system packages.

Check out Antix, Debian based, and it's primarily made for older devices and has a 32bit ISO

AFAIK it doesn't, but at least you have a secure job for the rest of your working days.

git clone --depth=1 ?

Wait a bit more and you'll go back to Debian when you get tired of failing to boot after an update.

It seems like most of the nice-sounding ones are proprietary.

That's pretty standard. Most FOSS projects don't have corporations feeding them 100's of thousands of dollars. Even when they do, well people still say gimp is far worse than ps. Blender is one of the rare complex projects that can compete with proprietary alternatives.

And any ideas why this is an underdeveloped area for open source?

My best guess is that it's really expensive and time consuming. I'd be surprised if those really good proprietary models didn't cost $100k+ just for training.
