All praise to the Grand Raccoon

Honestly I'd say don't overthink it, and start with something easy. Turn the difficulty low and go from there. You don't need to understand everything to play, and you only need to really focus on playing to all the intricacies if you get really in to it and want to play on harder difficulties or multiplayer. 95% of it you can just try shit and then learn from when things go badly.

If you have Warhammer 2, the lizards are pretty straightforward. Make a line of sauruses, and once they're fighting the enemy line, throw a dinosaur in like a wrecking ball. Enjoy watching the carnage.

If not, I can try to recommend other factions if you let me know what you do have. Otherwise, most normal factions are some flavour of have some melee units, some ranged units, then go to the enemy and fight it out. Put cavalry on the ends of your line to deal with other cavalry, attack special units, or charge the enemy's rear after you've engaged their line.

In general the strategy layer boils down to build buildings in towns to get more money or access to more units. Conquer more towns to get more of that. Again, strategy in those builds or army compositions is good and all but don't let that stop you. Start with a bunch of whatever, then add things based on what it seems like you need or what would be fun.

Definitely. It is great if you're playing it as a lifestyle game, but if you're at all intermittent at some point it's just unapproachable. Especially because it's not like the free updates add stuff that is just around and you can ignore. A lot of it is mandatory systems that are half baked without the associated dlc.

This model works great the way total war Warhammer does it, but I kinda wish paradox stuck with traditional expansions and a base game experience that stay stable.

This dlc sounds cool, but I can't be assed to learn all the new mechanics just to try it.

Related, I miss the asymmetric ftl from 1.0. i understand why they changed it, but it sucks that game is just gone.

For my fellow non-appreciators of videos:

A grounded sci-fi station builder where you hold failing systems together while pursued by a relentless, energy-hungry swarm. As a fleet on the run, drop into hostile systems, gather what you can, and jump away before you are overwhelmed. Try to survive long enough to secure a future for humanity.

All of those strike me as questions that an asshole would call stupid or is otherwise inappropriate for ask. In order:

It probably has a simple process answer. Some people might read it as a mean spirited question.

Very specific. This one was also crossposted a lot so I wouldn't read into the community choice.

This is about tv so probably would fit better in a tv community than ask.

OP hasn't heard of inflation. Though even adjusting for that and "new content" the answer is probably a very simple "yes". Not much to discuss.

Not sure if this is a can we or should we, but this isn't really an ask question. The former has a very straightforward answer (yes, it's the same protocol)

My take is no stupid questions is for questions you're afraid to ask anywhere else. As long as it's not hate speech masquerading as a question I ain't downvoting you, no matter how stupid the question is.

It's 1 if you do nothing. 0 or 5 if you pull. There's four tracks when you pull so on average it will result in 1.25 deaths.

Oh that's an interesting one. The expected value is higher if you pull the lever, so based on pure logic you shouldn't.

But I think I would, hoping for that 3/4 where I don't live with the guilt. I guess you can't expected value qualitative factors. But I always roll 1s in Blood Bowl so maybe that's dangerous.

This isn't helpful, but I was actually really disappointed by the people aspect of workers and resources. There's no agent model with people picking routes to their workplace or needs. They're just another type of resource you shunt around with limited models of searching from transit stops.

But yeah as far as trains are concerned factorio does seem to be the best available.

When browsing imgur the trans timelines from Reddit kept coming up. I eventually noticed I was feeling jealous of those women, and it occurred to me that probably said something.

I think what others said about the writers not thinking it through and the canon being wobbly is the right answer. But I had a thought about what it might be if we were to assume it's intentional:

Starfleet might have tiered selection processes based on the circumstances of the applicant. As we're talking about a distant future utopian society, I'm going to assume their education process in Starfleet Academy is good enough that they don't actually care how many facts Wesley knows. Those can be taught. They're trying to pick out the best and brightest. But they probably also want to maintain Starfleet's population as a whole as reasonably representative of the federation so that in times of war they are motivated to fight for the whole federation. They would also have advanced social sciences and are well aware of structural biases like privilege. Taken together, ill conceived entrance requirements could lead to a nepotism/caste of generational spacer families serving in Starfleet. That would be bad for the diplomatic side of the federation as then they'd be more loyal to the institution of Starfleet than the federation, and then the protection of Starfleet amounts to "trust me bro" when negotiating with prospective new member worlds who will want their people serving across Starfleet.

Those taken together means yes it makes sense to have a small and highly restricted and competitive pool for those who are the kids of senior officers serving in prestigious posts and granted unique educational opportunities.

Same instance yeah. This instance would make sense for a book specific community regardless, but I think there's something to be said for just using the general solarpunk community.

Agreed lemmy search can be hard lol

The definition of transgender is anyone who identifies with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. It is therefore an umbrella term that includes nonbinary genders. Being transgender and transitioning are separate things.

That being said, when people are talking about "trans people" they often mean binary trans people (ie men and women), especially in the current political context.

It's also not unheard of for some nonbinary people to be uncomfortable with calling themselves trans, presumably for the associations with binary trans people.

Edit: i should clarify, by this I mean transgender definitionally in the abstract. When talking about a specific person's identity, it just comes down how they identify. If an enby doesn't identify as trans for any reason, don't call them trans.

I have been keeping an eye on Terra Invicta for interest in the space development side of the game mostly. But now that it's released I've decided, reluctantly, that it is not for me as it's basically two different games stapled together, with some deeply questionable design choices.

Thinking about it gave me that spreadsheet game itch and it occurred to me that something that puts a grand strategy spin on kerbal space program would be really cool! Focus on mission planning, management, and R&D for early space flight through near future space industrial development/mining/permanent bases.

Has anyone heard of anything like that? Or should I just cave and give Aurora 4x another go?

Is there any way to see which instances a given instances is defederated from? Ideal would be something like a sortable list of instances with a federated yes/no.

I'm curious about what Lemmy is like in other instances and that seems like a good way to get an overview. Plus it would be helpful to know that corners of the fediverse I'm missing

Primaries level up from use, unlocking customization options in different slots. Slot availability varies by gun. It looks like all weapons have skins (great for the fashion game). The slots I've found so far include:

sights (different sights to taste, or trade off zoom <> ergonomics)

muzzle (recoil patterns mostly)

grip (recoil <> ergonomics/laser/flashlight)

magazine (capacity <> ergonomics/reload speed)

Looks fun! I kinda wish we could slot a bayonet but I can see why they would keep that exclusive
