Over the course of several months in 2024, TIME spoke to more than 40 people in the Granbury area who reported a medical ailment that they believe is connected to the arrival of the Bitcoin mine: hypertension, heart palpitations, chest pain, vertigo, tinnitus, migraines, panic attacks. At least 10 people went to urgent care or the emergency room with these symptoms. The development of large-scale Bitcoin mines and data centers is quite new, and most of them are housed in extremely remote places. There have been no major medical studies on the impacts of living near one. But there is an increasing body of scientific studies linking prolonged exposure to noise pollution with cardiovascular damage.

Third Avenue Bridge, which connects New York's the Bronx to Manhattan, got stuck in an open position due to the high heat on Monday.

The University of Texas at Arlington has closed its LGBTQ+ Program due to a new state law banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The program provided mental health resources, support groups, and community events for LGBTQ+ students. Sen. Brandon Creighton (R), who wrote the law, said in a statement, "The legislation makes it clear that student-led organizations are not impacted in any way. But it is also clear that taxpayer funds should not be spent on conferring special benefits based on race, color, ethnicity or sexual orientation."

A bunch of eighth graders in a "wealthy Philadelphia suburb" recently targeted teachers with an extreme online harassment campaign that The New York Times reported was "the first known group TikTok attack of its kind by middle schoolers on their teachers in the United States."

According to The Times, the Great Valley Middle School students created at least 22 fake accounts impersonating about 20 teachers in offensive ways. The fake accounts portrayed long-time, dedicated teachers sharing "pedophilia innuendo, racist memes," and homophobic posts, as well as posts fabricating "sexual hookups among teachers."

A new study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution shows that the number and intensity of the most extreme wildfires on Earth have doubled over the past two decades.

The authors of the new study, researchers at the University of Tasmania, first calculated the energy released by different fires over 21 years from 2003 to 2023. They did this by using a satellite-based sensor that can identify heat from fires, measuring the energy released as “fire radiative power.”

The researchers identified a total of 30 million fires (technically 30 million “fire events,” which can include some clusters of fires grouped together). They then selected the top 2,913 with the most energy released, that is, the 0.01 percent “most extreme” wildfires. Their work shows that these extreme wildfires are becoming more frequent, with their number doubling over the past two decades. Since 2017, the Earth has experienced the six years with the highest number of extreme wildfires (all years except 2022).

A military court in Moscow convicted a Russian playwright and a theatre director for “justifying terrorism” in a play about Isis brides and sentenced them to six years in prison each.

Svetlana Petrichuk and Yevgenia Berkovich were sentenced for producing a play called The Brave Falcon Finist that is inspired by Russian women who went to Syria in the mid-2010s to marry fighters of the terror group.

Petrichuk, 44, and Berkovich, 39, intend to appeal their conviction.

Their trial, which was partially held behind closed doors, has raised concerns about artistic freedom in the country.
