The HMNZS Manawanui - a specialist dive and hydrographic vessel - was conducting a reef survey when it hit the reef on Saturday night.

Reef successfully surveyed. Results: it's there.

Climate change is a bitch, huh, Republicans who've spent thirty years denying it? (My heart goes out to all the people in the southeast who actually didn't spend decades denying its existence and hampering efforts to slow it.)

>Arm good dogs with guns

>Bad dogs do not exist

>It's consequently impossible for the guns to fall into the paws of bad dogs

It's flawless.

I have, and there are. It's just that on average, boomers tend to be shittier than silent, Gen X, Gen Y (millennials), Gen Z, and Gen α. More entitled, less self-aware, less empathetic, less willing to learn or at least accept new concepts, less humble, less informed, and more bigoted. Boomers are very, very lucky that they have a sizeable contingent of hippies to buoy their reputation.

Bro who downvoted you for this. 😭 This is just a basic, honest mistake with a correction and a very polite and immediate acknowledgement of the mistake.

That's not what based means here. "Admirable; praiseworthy, especially if the thing that is considered "praiseworthy" is unpopular or controversial."

This is thoroughly untrue. Joshua and the Promised Land is the greatest piece of media of our generation.

Actually, they were banned for a previous comment where they painted users of this community as animal abusers. I realized with this concern trolling comment that I'd simply forgotten to ban them the first time around.

  • You host a party where you invite all your friends.
  • Everything is going well, people are having a good time, and then one random asshole you barely know starts making an ass out of themselves and talking bigoted shit, likely directed at groups your other guests are members of.
  • You tell this person to fuck off and get out of your house, immediately solving the problem instead of 1) coddling them over their shitty beliefs, 2) dignifying their position by trying to reconcile, and 3) giving them time to invite their at-least-equally shitty friends, thereby making the other guests uncomfortable.

I'm sorry you don't understand how this basic idea works.

Weird, I haven't been experiencing any of this. Am I still at risk of running into this issue if I haven't seen it so far? I don't use this shit-ass OS, if that helps.

Autumn is upon us in the northern hemisphere, and parts of the southern ought to still be pretty chilly. If you start getting cold, try tucking in your shirt. If you're wearing long pants and long socks, you can even tuck your pants into your socks, and this one's a big help too.

Why YSK: this one tip can save you a ton of money over your lifetime by lowering the threshold for when you need to put the heat on in your house, and it can make you feel more comfortable in the colder seasons. Wearing thicker clothes and layering helps, but there's only so many layers you can comfortably wear and clothes can only be so thick before you probably don't feel comfortable wearing them inside. If you're out and about, it might not be realistic or convenient to throw on another layer. This has become my first line of defense when I start getting cold. You should feel noticeably warmer within minutes.

Additional tip: if you have two shirts on, you can tuck the overshirt into your pants and the undershirt into your underpants to create a pocket of warm air that's way more insulating than if you tucked them into the same layer.

Edit: I know this is "common sense", but you'd be shocked at how many people either don't know about this or forget to use it.

The text of the law recognizes that octopuses are “highly intelligent, curious, problem-solving animals” that are conscious, sentient and experience “pain, stress, and fear, as well as pleasure, equanimity, and social bonds.” It goes on to note that in research studies, these eight-legged marine invertebrates have demonstrated long-term memory as well as the ability to recognize individual people.

At the very least, this sets a precedent, although it's pretty obvious based on the law's text that octopodes being the target here instead of or in addition to e.g. pigs which are known to be quite intelligent is a clear example of doublethink. Nonetheless, this is a huge win for just leaving animals the fuck alone.

Wait, Not All Wine Is Vegan? (www.chowhound.com)
submitted 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) by TheTechnician27@lemmy.world to c/vegan@lemmy.world

I know this is a relatively small culprit in the grand scheme of things, but I figure there are people out there who would want to know about this (lest the Vegan Police remove your vegan powers).

When wines are freshly fermented, they typically have particles suspended in the liquid, like tannins, yeast, and proteins, giving the wine a cloudy look. Over time, these will settle on their own [...], but that can be a slow process. So, winemakers often use the fining process to clarify their wine, making it a nice, clear, non-cloudy color. Certain proteins are added to the wine and effectively latch onto those cloudy particles before dropping to the bottom of a wine barrel, where they can be filtered out. It's these proteins that are the culprit here: The most commonly used fining agents are milk or animal proteins (specifically casein and gelatin), isinglass (a gelatin derived from fish bladders), and albumin (from egg whites). [...]

There are vegan-friendly fining agents, like activated charcoal and bentonite [...]. To confirm whether a wine is vegan, you may need to contact the winemaker or company directly. You can also consult a certification organization called BevVeg, which lists legitimate vegan wines. Alternatively, if wines are labeled as "unfined" or "unfiltered," this means that no fining agent has been used, so it should be a safe bet.

Can this man even do the one thing that his own name suggests he should be able to?? If not, how can we trust him to help the American people?

New York City (NYC) Health + Hospitals implemented a nutrition program making plant-based meals the primary lunch and dinner options for patients at its 11 hospitals.

The research was partly funded by ProVeg, but the evidence itself seems reasonably compelling, and the researchers appear to have done a good job controlling for factors that their previous study failed to.

I knew it was 1236 – 21 after Magna Carta, as if I could ever make such a mistake.
